NICS Checks Top 530,000 for ‘Black Friday’ Week

WASHINGTON, D.C. — NSSF®, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, revealed that the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) completed 530,156 background checks related to firearms for the week leading up to, and including, “Black Friday,” one of the busiest shopping days of the year. That figure is down from 2024’s total of 613,380 for the same time period. The 2025 total is a 13.6 percent decrease from the 2024 figure.

NICS completed 165,183 background checks on “Black Friday” alone. The figure approximates firearm sales at retail on that day, although it also includes background checks for other purposes related to firearms such as approvals for concealed carry permits. NSSF will later this week release its Adjusted NICS figures for November reflecting only those background checks related to the sale of a firearm at retail.

NSSF has worked with firearm retailers to spread out special sales offers to customers throughout the week leading up to “Black Friday” so as not to overwhelm FBI NICS on a single day, which can result in longer than normal wait times. Read more

U.S. Army Awards Mossberg Contract for Additional 590A1 Pump-Action Shotguns

O.F. Mossberg & Sons, Inc. is proud to announce that it has been awarded a contract for approximately $11.6 million dollars to supply the U.S. Army with additional Mossberg® 590A1™ pump-action shotguns. First adopted by multiple branches of the U.S. Military in 1987, the Mossberg 590® proved its reliability and durability by successfully completing the rigorous MIL-SPEC 3443E testing protocol.

Following its adoption, the U.S. Military requested a purpose-built variant capable of withstanding sustained, high-volume use in the most demanding environments. That requirement led directly to the development of the Mossberg 590A1 — a strengthened, mission-ready evolution of the original 590 platform.

“Mossberg is honored to receive an additional contract from the U.S. Department of Defense for the battle-proven 590A1 shotgun,” said John MacLellan, Mossberg’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “This award reflects our long commitment to supplying rugged, mission-capable firearms built to exacting standards — and reinforces our pledge to provide timely solutions that support the safety and effectiveness of U.S. service members.” Read more

Magpul Expands Hunter Lite Stock Line with Ruger American Short Action Variant

Magpul is continuing to grow in the outdoor space with its extensive collection of hunting stocks, the newest being the Hunter Lite-Ruger American Short Action for the Ruger American rifle; the Hunter Lite is compatible with both Gen 1 and 2 rifles.

As the name implies, the goal with the Hunter Lite line of stocks is to keep weight to a minimum; the Hunter Lite stock for the Ruger American comes in at 2.5 pounds – 25% lighter than the standard Hunter stock, and it’s 25% narrower, too.

While the stock cuts weight, it doesn’t cut features. The stock works for both right- and left-hand shooters thanks to a reversible inlet insert. The aluminum V-bedding block – the bedrock of the stock – is another way weight was slashed, though the block still uses reinforced steel pillars to prevent compression and deformation while shooting.

Adjusting stock fit and adding accessories is simple, too, and keeps the weight down thanks to the polymer components. The buttstock uses removeable half-inch spacers for LOP adjustment, and snap-on cheek risers for comb adjustment, while the forend features M-LOK attachment points, as well as integral sling swivel studs for use with a variety of slings and bipods.

Other features for the Hunter Lite include an enlarged trigger guard for comfortable use with gloves and easy access to the ambidextrous magazine release. The forend of the Hunter Lite is compatible with barrel profiles up to Medium Palma. Read more

J.P. Sauer & Sohn and Field Ethos Introduce The Exception Rifle in 9.3×62

This adventure rifle is designed for the most challenging hunting adventures. It is the ultimate ‘working man’s adventure rifle’ and an exceptional value.

Developed in the early 1900s, the 9.3x62mm cartridge was widely used by German farmers and settlers in colonial Africa due to its effectiveness in taking a wide array of species from plains game to Cape Buffalo. The caliber’s versatility made it an easy choice for The Exception.

“The Exception is designed to handle any adventure you can throw at it while maintaining the classic look of a traditional safari rifle,” said Ron Dan, President, Field Ethos. “Using a Sauer in 9.3×62 as a base, we have added features you would find at 4x the price, and we have a rifle that can accompany you throughout the world. Tapping into the lineage and capabilities of the 9.3×62 cartridge, we now have a rifle that is as reliable as it is versatile.”

GOA and Gun Owners Foundation Declare DOJ Brief an Open Attack on the Second Amendment and Constitution

The Department of Justice filed an outrageous brief that embraces an alarmingly expansive theory of federal authority. In responding to GOA and GOF’s “One, Big, Beautiful Lawsuit,” the DOJ treats Congress’ removal of the historic $200 tax as a pretext to rewrite the limits of congressional power, advancing an argument that would open the door to federal regulation far beyond anything the Framers intended.

GOA and GOF condemn Attorney General Pam Bondi and President Trump’s Department of Justice (DOJ) for doubling down on enforcement of an archaic and unconstitutional law while simultaneously offering legal theories that would expand federal power to historic levels. This is especially striking from an administration that had promised to respect the Second Amendment and review burdensome agency rules.

The implications of DOJ’s stance are immediate and ominous. If the brief’s logic is accepted, courts could bless a framework under which Congress and federal agencies regulate—or effectively ban—common firearms and accessories by treating formalistic features (like a $0 tax) as sufficient legal cover. That outcome would run contrary to recent Supreme Court statements that the Second Amendment protects private arms possession.

GOA and our partners are demanding the Department of Justice to publicly explain and retract all portions of the brief that advance a limitless theory of federal power. Read more
