Youth and disabled hunters: the Liberty Hunt is next weekend!

The Liberty Hunt – a firearm deer season for youth 16 years of age or younger and veterans with 100% disability- takes place on all lands in Michigan Sept. 21 – 22.

During this two-day hunt, a firearm or combination license may be used for antlered or antlerless deer. The bag limit for this season is one deer. Read more about this hunt, including qualifications and other regulations in the 2013 Hunting and Trapping Digest on pages 26 and 30.

Young hunters, ages 16 and under, will once again have the opportunity to get a free junior hunting license at all Meijer stores in Michigan on Sept. 13 and 14. 

Youths must be accompanied by an adult, and should print out and bring the free junior hunting license coupon to the store’s sporting goods department. The coupon is valid for any junior hunting license or mentored youth hunting license. Read more

Michigan trapper education course now offered in classroom, online

A trapper education course is now being offered in classroom settings and online for Michigan residents who are interested in trapping furbearing animals. The course is not a requirement in Michigan, but the Department of Natural Resources and the conservation community strongly encourage new trappers to take advantage of the knowledge and skills taught in the course. LANSING—As the last piece of the natural resource budget puzzle for Fiscal Year 2014, the Michigan House of Representatives just concurred in the Senate amendments to House Bill 4668, a bill which would implement a fairly substantial overhaul of the state’s hunting, fishing and trapping license system. Upon the Governor’s approval, the new prices will go into effect when the new license year sales begin on March 1, 2014. Read more
