Statement from Chris W. Cox Regarding “Universal” Background Checks

An article appearing on TheHill.com yesterday asserted that Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) is working on a bill with the NRA that would implement universal background checks.
NRA does NOT support universal background checks and is not working with Manchin to implement this type of legislation.  NRA opposes, and will continue to oppose, universal background checks and registration schemes.
We do believe that records of those who are prohibited by law from purchasing firearms (including those whose mental health history puts them in this category) ought to be included in the federal instant check system.

Michigan Legislator Wants NY Guns Business

“Michigan workers are second to none and because of many bold reforms last session, our state is open for business,” said Michigan Senator, Mike Green, who represents Arenac, Bay, Huron, Sanilac and Tuscola counties . “We also respect constitutional rights and legal commerce in state law, so in light of New York’s recent gun control legislation, we’re encouraging this American icon (Remingon Arms) to bring their plants and thousands of jobs to Michigan.”  More here…

Winter Nutcrackers in Michigan

By Glen Wunderlich

Old Man Winter has finally made an appearance and has blessed Michigan with frozen everything from toes to water pipes.  The wintering birds are flocking to feeders –and, yes, mourning doves by the dozen, too – in their never-ending quest to survive.  Animals have an innate response to harsh weather by feeding heavily before ominous weather fronts approach, and with that understanding and a trusty .22 caliber rimfire, I headed to the woods at dawn in search of squirrels.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

In Michigan, squirrels aren’t hunted as much as they are in some of the southern states and are quite under-utilized making for little competition from other hunters in most areas. I learned early in life that the .22 rimfire was the best tool for the job – not that a shotgun won’t bring them down – but, who needs the hidden lead pellets, extra holes, extra noise, extra cost, etc.   Read more

Survey Finds NRA Members United

FAIRFAX, Va. – The National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action conducted a national scientific poll of its members and found near unanimity among NRA members on a wide range of issues involving mental health reform and firearm rights.

Gun control advocates including New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, as well as various media outlets, have released data claiming to represent the views of NRA members, despite the fact that none of those surveys had access to the NRA’s membership list. The NRA survey of 1,000 randomly-selected NRA members across the country is the only legitimate survey of NRA members in existence. Read more

HSUS Gags on Disinformation

There’s an interesting new proposed law in New Hampshire that would require people who have filmed cruelty to livestock to give the footage to authorities within 24 hours. Is this a good idea? We think so. But the Humane Society of the United States and other vegan animal rights groups are up in arms.

Instead of doing what’s best for animals in the case of cruelty, animal acitivists build a case through any means necessary, and in effect, delay response time by authorities.  More here…

Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show

National Shooting Sports Foundation Statement on the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show

We have just learned that Reed Exhibitions has decided to postpone the 2013 Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show.

In  the days following Reed Exhibitions’ announcement that modern sporting  rifles would be prohibited from the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show, the  leadership of the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) has been  in intense, frank discussions with Reed Exhibitions management in an  effort to reverse this unacceptable decision. These discussions reached  an impasse.

NSSF  is in no way affiliated with, nor does it participate in or exhibit at  this show in any way. Reed Exhibitions does, however, manage the  NSSF-owned SHOT Show (though Reed manages the SHOT Show, all SHOT Show  decisions, policies and actions are made at NSSF’s direction).

Because of Reed’s recent actions, NSSF is considering all options regarding the management of future SHOT Shows.
