Michigan Firearms Legislation Update

House Bill 5225 H-4 passed the full Michigan House of Representatives on Wednesday, June 13 on a vote of 74-36 along with companion legislation HB 5498 and HB 5499.  These bills repeal the permit to purchase process and registration requirements for pistols in Michigan.  MCRGO actively supports these bills and has been laying the groundwork for the repeal of mandatory registration over the past five years.

NICS checks would remain in place for FFL dealers.  The legislation would require state and local police agencies to destroy their pistol registries within six months following the effective date of the new law.  Michigan is currently one of a very small minority of states that maintain mandatory state registration.  The federal government is legally prohibited from maintaining a national pistol registry.

The H-4 version of HB 5225 can be found here

The Michigan Legislature began its summer recess on Friday, June 15.  The bills are expected to be taken up by the Michigan Senate this fall.

Cortland , NY…….The 17 Hornet is the hottest new cartridge of the year and handloaders are excited to get going on load development. Redding solves this by offering their Competition Model 10x Powder measure which was specifically designed as a “bench rest” quality measure originally intended for the silhouette market. Read more

Redding Introduces New Profile Crimp Die for 45-70 FTX Cases

Cortland , NY……. Because the unique Hornaday FTX bullet for the 45-70 cartridge requires cases to be trimmed shorter than the minimum SAAMI length, standard reloading dies cannot properly crimp these cases. Their required length for proper function keeps the case mouth from reaching the crimp ring in a standard die. Responding to the difficulties encountered by handloaders using this bullet, Redding Reloading Equipment has introduced a new Profile crimp dies designed specifically to meet this need. Read more

Easing Restrictions on Michigan Deer Hunters

By   Glen Wunderlich

When State House Representative Matt Lori (R – District 59) called me about my position on HB 5249 – a bill that would make certain straight-wall cartridges legal for deer hunting in Michigan’s southern zone –   I was pleasantly surprised.  For those of you not familiar with the proposed legislation, here it is:  It would allow a .35 caliber or larger rifle loaded with straight-wall cartridges of a minimum case length of 1.16 and a maximum case length of 1.8 inches in Zone III (shotgun zone.)  I had written that the legislation should have been amended to allow all straight-wall cartridges – an argument based on ballistics.
