Fire danger remains high in northern Michigan, despite rain

A continuing lack of moisture this spring has resulted in exceptional action by Gov. Rick Snyder. On May 25, the governor ordered a ban on outdoor burning in 49 counties in the northern part of Michigan. Easing Restrictions on Michigan Deer Hunters

When State House Representative Matt Lori (R – District 59) called me about my position on HB 5249 – a bill that would make certain straight-wall cartridges legal for deer hunting in Michigan’s southern zone –   I was pleasantly surprised.  For those of you not familiar with the proposed legislation, here it is:  It would allow a .35 caliber or larger rifle loaded with straight-wall cartridges of a minimum case length of 1.16 and a maximum case length of 1.8 inches in Zone III (shotgun zone.)  I had written that the legislation should have been amended to allow all straight-wall cartridges – an argument based on ballistics. Duck Lake Fire Media Advisory: DNR to host public meeting for evacuated residents May 27

The Department of Natural Resources will host a public meeting at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 27, in Newberry for those residents who were evacuated from the area or those who have questions about the evacuations. Michigan DNR offers guidance to public on outdoor burning ban

On Friday, May 25, 2012, Gov. Rick Snyder ordered a ban on outdoor burning in 49 Michigan counties because of the extremely high wildfire danger that continues to threaten those portions of the state. Suppression efforts continue in U.P.’s Duck Lake Fire

GW:  Governor Snyder has declared a “state of disaster” Friday, which means all state resources will be made available to protect public health and safety in the ongoing efforts to fight the wildfires.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources along with partner agencies continues to battle the Duck Lake Fire in the Upper Peninsula’s Luce County. The fire, which began with a lightning strike, covered 17,935 acres as of 4 p.m. Friday, May 25. Read more

Tester-Moran Amendment to Block Use of Taxpayer Money to Lobby for UN Gun Ban Passes by Voice Vote

As we reported last week, every gun owner concerned about the future of our Right to Keep and Bear Arms should be aware that the United Nations and the global gun eradication movement are attempting  to eliminate our Second Amendment freedoms by drafting a U.N. Arms Trade Treaty.  This treaty would cover tanks, helicopters, and other heavy weapons but could also include civilian rifles, shotguns and handguns.  The treaty’s language will be finalized by the U.N. this July during a four week conference.
