Michigan DNR verifies three Upper Peninsula cougar photos

Three recent trail camera photos of cougars in the Upper Peninsula have been verified by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

Two of the photos, both of a cougar with a radio collar, were taken in October in Menominee County – one near Cedar River and one near Menominee just north of the Wisconsin border.

The third photo was taken in northern Marquette County in November. The cougar in the Marquette County photo is not wearing a radio collar.

 

The DNR does not place radio collars on cougars; North Dakota and South Dakota are the nearest states where wildlife researchers have placed radio collars on cougars to track their movement. The DNR has not yet been able to determine the origin of the radio-collared cougar that is in Michigan. Read more

A look inside the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) – the largest and most well-financed anti-hunting group in the world.  For example, grants made by HSUS for the purpose of aiding pet sheltering appear to make up about only 0.25% (one-quarter of one percent) of HSUS’s budget. Procedural Motion Stops Sportsmen’s Act of 2012 in Senate

Fish and wildlife conservation put into jeopardy through partisan politics

Alexandria, VA  – November 27, 2012 – In a surprise upset, the U.S. Senate failed to advance the Sportsmen’s Act of 2012 (S. 3525). After months of discussion with Senate members by a diverse coalition of angling, hunting and conservation organizations to create a historic bill containing 17 key provisions for anglers, hunters and fish and wildlife conservation, the bill failed to pass over a party line vote on a procedural motion.

“The shocking aspect of this bill’s defeat – one that would have such a positive impact on anglers, hunters and fish and wildlife conservation – is that it occurred over a budget argument giving the Secretary of the Interior the ability to increase the duck stamp price $10, thus pumping more dollars into wetland conservation for both fisheries and wildlife benefits” said Gordon Robertson, vice president of the American Sportfishing Association (ASA). Lake Orion student’s design wins 2013 Michigan Wild Turkey Cooperator patch contest

Lauren Gamboa, a freshman at Lake Orion High School, has won the design competition for the 2013 Michigan Wild Turkey Cooperator patch contest, the Department of Natural Resources announced.

The winning design for the 2013 Michigan Wild Turkey Cooperator patch features feathers from a turkey’s breast, wing and tail.Gamboa, who was an eighth-grader at Waldon Middle School in Lake Orion when she submitted her design, created a patch using drawings of feathers from a turkey’s breast, wing and tail as part of her design. Snowshoeing in Michigan

A well done video is here on the oft-overlooked mode of human transportation in deep snow.  Made me recall the days when I hunted on snowshoes for snowshoe hares.  Spooky in the cedars.  A pistol –  in my case a Ruger MK II – was all that was needed to sneak into the low areas and plink some fine tablefare.

The video doesn’t take anyone hunting, and really there’s not much snow for the video, either.  But, it conjurs up visions nonetheless…
