New boating, fishing laws help stewardship efforts over next 100 years

Love to boat or fish? You’ll want to make note of some recent changes in Michigan’s Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act geared toward preventing the spread of invasive species and supporting natural resources stewardship efforts for the future.

In addition to the existing law requiring all aquatic plants be removed from boats and trailers before launching, the changes require the following, prior to transporting any watercraft over land:

  • Remove all drain plugs from bilges, ballast tanks and live wells.
  • Drain all water from any live wells and bilges.
  • Ensure the watercraft, trailer and any conveyance (vehicle) used to transport the watercraft or trailer are free of aquatic organisms, including plants.

This means after trailering boats and before getting on the road, boaters must pull plugs, drain water and remove plants and debris from all watercraft, trailers and other conveyances. View new rules.

Really? Baiting Proposed in Michigan

Senate Bill 37 of 2019 has been given a hearing date and time before the Senate Natural Resources Committee. SB 37, sponsored by Sen. Curt VanderWall (R-Ludington), would allow the baiting and feeding of white-tailed deer and elk in Michigan. The chair of the Senate Natural Resources Committee is Ed McBroom (R-Vulcan).

Aside from the resounding recommendation from the scientific community across the nation that recognizes baiting and feeding as manmade contributors to disease, a further issue is this bill’s circumventing of Proposal G — which gives the Michigan Natural Resources Commission the exclusive authority over baiting and feeding in Michigan. This bill could set a dangerous precedent moving forward with natural resources issues. MUCC has fought hard to keep many natural resources issues out of the hands of legislators and in the hands of the Natural Resources Commission.

MUCC has been on record opposing baiting and feeding, with the exception of supplemental feeding in the U.P. when it is needed, for more than a decade. Several resolutions have passed in the last 10 years reaffirming our members’ and the organization’s commitment to opposing baiting and feeding of white-tailed deer.

Furthermore, elk baiting in Michigan has not been a practice in the foreseeable past.

Volunteer to help guard Michigan’s sturgeon

The Black Lake Chapter of Sturgeon for Tomorrow (Cheboygan County) is seeking volunteers to join in its effort, in partnership with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, to help protect lake sturgeon from illegal harvest during the annual spawning run.

Every spring, mature lake sturgeon – a fish species that is threatened in Michigan and rare throughout the United States – become vulnerable to poaching as they briefly leave Black Lake for spawning sites upstream in the Black River.

Hundreds of volunteers are needed to stand guard along the Black River during the spawning season (mid-April through early June) to report suspicious activity and deter the unlawful take of this iconic fish.

“The annual Sturgeon Guarding Program has proven that people serving as sturgeon guards watching over the river have virtually eliminated poaching, while helping to ensure the protection and reproductive success of the species,” said May Paulson, the program’s new volunteer coordinator. Read more

Michigan: more prescribed burns on the way this spring

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. As spring nears, Michigan residents may occasionally see some smoke, courtesy of prescribed fires, or burns, carried out in different areas of the state by the DNR. They can be conducted any time of year, but most burns are done in the spring and fall.

The DNR works closely with local officials in areas where burns are planned. Weather is carefully monitored, too, and burns will be canceled if conditions are unfavorable.

These carefully staged fires help control invasive species and create critical habitat for wildlife. And, strange as it may sound, these fires also help our forests grow! Want to learn more? SAF: ‘Red Flag’ Laws Must Protect Due Process

BELLEVUE, WA – Extreme Risk Protection Orders, generically known as “red flag laws” that allow the seizure of private firearms based on a complaint filed with the authorities must include and guarantee due process, or they shouldn’t be allowed, the Second Amendment Foundation said today.

Amid rising concerns about due process in the enforcement of such laws, which have already resulted in one fatal shooting in Maryland, SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb said there is always the potential for abuse without careful scrutiny. He questioned the motives of some politicians who support “red flag” laws without consideration for the rights of affected gun owners.

“More needs to be done to keep politicians with power grab addictions away from people’s guns,” the gun rights advocate observed. “That is the ‘red flag’ kind of law we should all support.” Read more

Stainless Ruger American Rimfires

Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc. (NYSE: RGR) proudly introduces four new Target models to the Ruger American® Rimfire family. Constructed from stainless steel for superior aesthetics and corrosion resistance, all four rifles live up to Ruger’s reputation for accuracy and rugged reliability.
