DNR monitors waterfowl populations from the sky

ducks seen in aerial waterfowl surveyDepartment of Natural Resources wildlife staff members recently took to the sky in small aircraft to observe and count ducks, geese and swans on southeast Michigan’s waterways. They observed 157,028 ducks, 33,468 geese and 5,896 swans in the 2016 survey.

In the 2015 survey, observers counted 173,386 ducks, 20,350 geese and 4,365 swans. Goose and swan observations increased in 2016, while duck observations were down about 9 percent.

“The ducks were spread out this year with the mild winter and all the open water,” said Joe Robison, field operations manager for the DNR Wildlife Division’s Southeast Region.  “We did not count as many ducks in this year’s survey, but we believe that duck abundance is similar to last year.”

Since 1991, the state of Michigan has cooperated with other states, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Canadian provinces and the Canadian Wildlife Service in conducting aerial surveys of wintering ducks and geese. This survey is commonly referred to as the Mid-Winter Waterfowl Survey. Read more

Marquette man arraigned on waterfowl and illegal chartering charges

Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officers announced today a Marquette man has been arraigned in two counties on a total of 26 charges related to alleged waterfowl and charter operation violations.

Terry Jay Wilson, 30, of Marquette was arraigned Jan. 25 in Arenac County District Court in Standish. Wilson waived arraignment in Mackinac County District Court in St. Ignace on additional charges.

The charges from both counties were the result of a 2-year undercover investigation by detectives from the Michigan DNR Law Enforcement Division’s Special Investigations Unit.

The 26 counts – 17 from Arenac County and 9 from Mackinac County – ranged from operating an unlicensed and uninspected charter boat, to hunting waterfowl from a boat under power and exceeding waterfowl bag limits. Read more

Suppressors Legal for Hunting in Michigan

On February 11th, Michigan became the 38th state to allow for the use of firearm suppressors while hunting when the Natural Resources Commission (NRC) voted 4 – 1 to approve an amended version of Wildlife Conservation Order Amendment No. 1 of 2016. The measure became effective immediately.

The initial proposal included two arbitrary restrictions which would have limited the decibel reduction of suppressors allowed in the field to 30 dB, and would have also prohibited the use of subsonic ammunition by anyone using a suppressor while hunting. Prior to the final vote, Commissioner Louise Klarr offered an amendment to remove these two provisions from the proposed rule. Her measure passed also 4 – 1. Read more
