NEW AVIAN-X LCD LAYDOWN HEN SENDS GOBBLERS ALL THE RIGHT SIGNALS

Port Clinton, OH (December 18, 2015) – Hens play the ultimate roles in determining spring gobbler behavior and, ultimately, spring turkey hunting success. From the first gobbling of the breeding season through the very end of the nesting period, toms are constantly on the lookout for receptive hens.

Like males of the human species, gobblers aren’t mind readers. Even the most macho sometimes needs an obvious sign. In the turkey world, a hen simply can’t convey her receptiveness to suitors any more clearly than by laying down. Bow-chicka-bow-wow. Read more

Nikon Introduces New Products to Combat Wind Drift

While it’s no secret that the wind can have an effect on the trajectory of a bullet, not all hunters and shooters have the training or experience to adequately compensate for the effects of wind drift. But thanks to two new product lines from Nikon Sport Optics, hunters and shooters now have an effective and easy-to-use system to compensate for bullet wind drift.
Nikon is pleased to announce the availability of the MONARCH 5 riflescope line, an exciting 2015 introduction that will surely be a flagship product for years to come.  Not only does the MONARCH 5 riflescope line feature Nikon’s legendary ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass lenses, it is also the first Nikon riflescope to utilize the new Advanced BDC reticle and has an incredible 5-time zoom ratio for superior close-quarters and long-range effectiveness.
The new glass-etched Advanced BDC reticle, similar to the

standard BDC reticle, has unique open circles going down the vertical sight post that are used as aiming points to compensate for bullet drop at extended ranges. What differentiates the Advanced BDC reticle is that it also has windage marks on both the left and right side of the post. Each windage mark is calibrated for a 10-mile-per-hour cross wind when the rifle is zeroed at either 100 or 200 yards. Even if the cross wind is more or less than 10 mph, shooters now have a reliable benchmark to compensate for the effect that a strong gust of wind can have on their point of impact.

Nikon has also launched the Spot On™ Ballistic Wind Meter that plugs directly into the headphone port found on almost all smart phones. The Spot On Wind Meter takes an accurate reading of the wind speed and direction and inputs the data directly into the Spot On Ballistic Match Technology™ Application that every serious hunter and shooter should have on their smart phone.

Last Michigan elk hunt of 2015 is complete

DNR staff member checking in elk hunterAlthough it may not feel like a Michigan December, the final 2015 elk hunt drew to a close last weekend.”We had crazy weather conditions for this year’s late elk hunt,” said Department of Natural Resources wildlife biologist Shelby Hiestand. “In a typical year, we would have had a ton of snow on the ground, where hunters could track and pattern elk and really have a better chance at spotting them against the white snow.”

Although conditions may not have been typical for the December elk hunt, the harvest was still quite successful. Ninety-two percent of hunters harvested an elk this December season, totaling 46 elk. Each hunter was selected out of a random, weighted lottery of more than 31,000 Michigan hunters who applied to hunt elk this year. Read more
