USFWS Conducting Five-Year Review for Canada Lynx in Preparation for Recovery Planning

HELENA, Mont. – The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) announced yesterday that it will be conducting a Five-Year Status Review under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) for the contiguous United States distinct population segment (DPS) of the Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis). The Five-Year Status Review will clarify the extent, magnitude, and nature of the threats to the lynx DPS so that recovery planning may target those specific threats.

Lynx are highly specialized predators that are dependent on snowshoe hares as a food source. The North American distribution of the lynx overlaps much of the range of the snowshoe hare, and both are strongly associated with boreal forests. Read more

Marksmen Return to Port Clinton to Compete in 2015 Camp Perry Open

CAMP PERRY, Ohio – Over 200 competitors and counting are registered to compete in the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s (CMP) ninth annual Camp Perry Open, Jan. 16-18, 2015, at the Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center. The popular competition is guaranteed to bring a whole new set of crowds and fresh perspectives to the winter scenery in the Port Clinton area.

Some of the best marksmen in the country will be competing in Port Clinton’s backyard – including members of the Army Marksmanship Unit and the USA Shooting team. Events to be fired during the competition include the Men’s and Women’s 60 Shot Air Rifle and Pistol matches and 3×20 Junior Air Rifle individual and team matches.

The competition is open to air rifle and air pistol athletes of all ages and experience levels. Registration will continue to be open until the start of each event, for those interested in taking a shot at the world of marksmanship. Visitors are welcome into the range to observe at any time during the match – with free admission.

The highlight of the Camp Perry Open that sets it apart from other matches is the highly anticipated Super Final – which breaks from the traditionally quiet, concentrated finals administered during marksmanship events and is arguably the most unique finals system in the arena of competitive shooting. This year’s Super Finals will be fired at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 17.

During the Super Finals, spectators are urged to bang on metal chairs, blast music, blow noisemakers and playfully hoot and holler at an attempt to distract the competitors and break their concentration for firing a perfect shot. Guests who have never seen the Super Finals are encouraged to attend and join in on the fun by being as LOUD as possible!

Preparing for Violence

If the recent events in Paris have proven anything, it’s that terrorism and violence have no boundaries. Incidents like this erupt without warning and those who are not prepared will be forced to sit dumbstruck and wait for help. This help may not arrive in time to save lives. PERSONAL PROTECTION

If you plan on using a gun for protection, that gun must be with you at the time the attack starts. You will not have time to go get your gun once the attack begins. Some people claim to have a sidearm on their person in hopes of using that sidearm to fight their way to a long gun, which they believe is a better tool in a deadly force encounter. Snakes & Shotshells: What’s Best? Answer In The Latest “Roy’s Insider Tips” Video

In the latest video in the “Roy’s Insider Tips” series, American Handgunner Publisher Roy Huntington examines the effectiveness of shotshell cartridges for defending against snakes and other unwanted varmints. Huntington tests the capabilities with three different shot cartridges from CCI – .22 LR, .22 Magnum and .45 Colt – to discover which is best for handling pesky varmints.

“CCI’s elegant shot cartridges have always been appealing. The thought of having a ‘mini-shotgun’ in your revolver or semi-auto is just too irresistible to ignore,” Roy explains. “But in the interest of seeing just how effective they really are, we blasted some hard target paper to see how they penetrate and just what kind of spread is delivered in the real world.”

Shooting at toe-to-snake distances, Roy experiments with a Ruger Super Single Six in .22 LR and .22 Magnum, and a vintage S&W Mode 25 in .45 Colt to pinpoint the real-world effectiveness of CCI handgun caliber shot loads.

“Are they effective? It looks like the .22 LR versions max out on mice or the errant attacking grasshopper or wasp,” Huntington says. “But moving up in caliber, the .38 Special, .44 Special, .45 Colt and others suddenly become serious tools for field use.” Read more
