DNR awards Wildlife Habitat Grants for projects around the state
The Department of Natural Resources today announced recipients of the 2014 Wildlife Habitat Grants. A total of $737,720 was awarded to various conservation and nonprofit organizations, units of government and landowners.
Examples of funded projects include planting native grasslands for pheasant habitat at Lake Hudson State Recreation Area, planting fruit trees for wild turkey and ruffed grouse food sources in several locations across the state, and improving accessibility for limited-mobility hunters and wildlife enthusiasts at Sharonville State Game Area.

Representative Greg MacMaster’s has gone as far as to try and grant wild boar born in Michigan “citizenship”–HB 5432 would deem any swine born in Michigan or legally imported to Michigan as “native”, meaning that they could only be identified as livestock and could not be considered invasive species. This is like saying Asian carp are fine, as long as they were born here!

White-nose syndrome confirmed in bats in Michigan
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and a consortium of partners announced today that the fungus known to cause significant rates of illness and death in North American bats has been detected for the first time within the state’s borders. White-nose syndrome (WNS) has been found in three Michigan counties: Alpena, Dickinson and Mackinac. Read more
DNR asks anglers to be on the lookout for tagged walleye
To improve its knowledge of walleye populations in Lake Huron and Saginaw Bay, the Department of Natural Resources’ Fisheries Division is set to tag nearly 3,000 walleye in Saginaw Bay tributary rivers over the next two weeks. A total of 1,000 walleye will be tagged in the Tittabawassee River and the remaining 2,000 in other tributary streams. To get the most information from these efforts, anglers are asked to collect data on tagged fish they catch and report it to the DNR. Read more
