Starting Saturday, March 1, Michigan sportsmen and women will see something they haven’t witnessed in many years: changes to the state’s hunting, fishing and ORV license options – a lineup that hadn’t undergone real change since 1997. The changes are happening for good reason.
The new license structure provides a simpler license-buying experience, brings Michigan’s license options and prices in line with those of other states, and generates the revenue necessary to deliver the best in outdoor recreation opportunities.
The first thing customers will notice is an easier-to-navigate number of license choices – from 227 down to just over 40. Individual archery deer and firearm deer licenses? Gone. Restricted fishing license? Ditto. Pricing on several items has changed, too; some prices have risen, some remain the same, and others have decreased. Read more

With warmer temperatures for most of Michigan in the forecast this week, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) urges ice anglers and snowmobilers to remember: No ice is safe ice. “With several days of warmer temperatures in the forecast this week, including the possibility of rainy days in the high 40s, we want to remind ice fishermen and snowmobilers that thawing will occur and that will definitely weaken ice,” said Lt. Andrew Turner, marine safety and education supervisor for the DNR Law Enforcement Division. “By following some guidelines on how ice looks and feels, you can avoid your day of ice fishing ending as a life-threatening incident.” According to Turner, you can’t always tell the strength of ice simply by its look, its thickness, the temperature or whether or not it is covered with snow. The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reminds everyone that after the heavy ice and snow cover melts on Michigan’s lakes this winter, it may be common to discover dead fish or other aquatic creatures. This year’s more severe winter with heavy snow and ice cover will create conditions that cause fish and other creatures such as turtles, frogs, toads and crayfish to die. Read more
