U.S. House Passes NRA-backed National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Legislation

The U.S. House of Representatives has passed an important self-defense measure that would enable millions of Right-to-Carry permit holders across the country to carry concealed firearms while traveling outside their home states. H.R. 822, the National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act, passed by a majority bipartisan vote of 272 to 154. All amendments aimed to weaken or damage the integrity of this bill were defeated. Indiana Closes Investigation into Hunter’s Death

A good lesson learned.  Don’t try to finish off a deer with a knife.  They can suddenly “come to life” and windmill-kick like a mule on steroids.

ALBION – Indiana Conservation Officers have closed the investigation of a hunter’s death at Chain O’Lakes State Park after the Noble County Coroner’s office ruled the death was due to a lacerated liver, possibly from an encounter the hunter had with a deer he shot. Read more

Opening Day Success

Opening day began with fog heavy enough to severly limit sight lines for the first hour or so.

But Joe Reynolds was able to hear an approaching deer but the fog was cover enough for the whitetail to vanish.  Within a short time, however, the healty 8-pointer gave Joe a quartering-to-him angle, and the 325-grain tipped Barnes put the whammy on the opening-morning buck, penetrating well over 14 inches, breaking ribs in and out, and exiting.  The mortally wounded deer lived for about 5 seconds after the pull of the trigger.

The Opener is Here

One last post before heading to the great outdoors for opening day.  I’ll tote my custom .45/70 JDJ Contender stoked with Hornady’s Flex Tip 325-grain bullets for today.  I’ll be on stand for over 12 hours (of course, if the big fella doesn’t show), so posts for the foreseealbe future will be slim.

We’ll Hear the Sunrise

The game face is on. Getting ready is over. It’s the eve of opening day of firearms deer season state-wide and it’s no time for liver and onions. Or, any other concoction that could erupt like Ol’ Faithful in the midst of prime time.

It’s early to bed and early to rise. Early enough to be ahead of the other guy. Nothing like sipping a home-brewed coffee from the Thermos while imagining in the dark.

Yes, we’ll be able to hear the sunrise, even if we can’t see it.
