One of the Midwest’s most prominent mid-distance sled dog races will be held in a new location this year. The Department of Natural Resources today announced the Tahquamenon Country Sled Dog Race (TCSDR), held the last 13 years at Rainbow Lodge on the mouth of the Two-Hearted River, will be hosted this winter by Muskallonge Lake State Park from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5. NRA initially withheld comment about the horrible crime that took place in Newtown, Connecticut last week, out of respect for the families of the crime’s victims and other residents of that community, and while law enforcement officials there conducted their investigation. However, President Obama and a usual cast of characters, in keeping with their longstanding practice of not letting any crisis go to waste, quickly used the tragedy to push their gun ban agenda. The National Rifle Association’s 4 million mothers, fathers, sons and daughters join the nation in horror, outrage, grief and earnest prayer for the families of Newtown, Connecticut … who suffered such incomprehensible loss as a result of this unspeakable crime.
Out of respect for those grieving families, and until the facts are known, the NRA has refrained from comment. While some have tried to exploit tragedy for political gain, we have remained respectfully silent.

Outdoor enthusiasts seeking a unique winter getaway are reminded that several of Michigan’s State Parks have yurts available for rental year-round.

There are so many opinions about “doing something” about guns, I’ve purposely avoided comment to date. But, after reading an AP piece, it’s easy to see why people become confused.
It begins by stating that the previous “assault weapons” ban was considered imperfect by many. Then it starts the misinformation indicating that if the ban had been in place during the Sandy Hook killings, it would have been illegal for the gunman to use the 30-round magazines…

On Friday, sparks flew on Alan Warren Outdoors, a Texas-based radio show. HSUS CEO Wayne Pacelle went on to explain his organization’s position on hunting and fishing. Warren, a hunting advocate, pressed Pacelle hard on what kind of hunting HSUS supports. And then we called in to debate Wayne about his animal rights group’s deceptive practices on the whole.
You’d think a slick politician like Pacelle, especially given the size of his ego, would be happy to try to talk his way around our criticism of his organization. But instead, he spouted off a few insults and then hung up.

“I believe that it is important that these public institutions have clear legal authority to ban weapons from their premises,” he said in his written response to legislation that would allow concealed carry in gun-free zones. “Each is entrusted with the care of a vulnerable population and should have the authority to determine whether its mission would be enhanced by the addition of concealed weapons.”
Just wondering how we will ever ban whackos.
In South Carolina another proposal has been tendered in response to Sandy Hook: Bill No. 3160, submitted Monday by Rep. Philip Lowe, R-Florence requires that each school employee wishing to carry a firearm on campus would be approved individually by that school’s board. Read more

“A single black wolf grabbed my arm and started jerking on me”, exclaimed Lance Grangaard, who was attacked in a remote area off the Taylor Highway known as Ketchumstuk in Alaska.
“I just tried to get on top of him; I didn’t want to be on the bottom when we landed.”
