Deer Survival in Michigan Broken Down

To better understand predator-prey relationships, SCI Foundation helped fund studies on  Whitetail deer in Michigan.   In Michigan, Deer survival is influenced by many factors including disease, predation, weather, and hunter harvest. In the Upper Peninsula (UP) of Michigan, deer survival is especially influenced by winter food supply and cover.  Predators also play a role in the survival of deer, particularly fawn survival during the spring and summer. Understanding deer survival and the factors that influence survival throughout the year is vitally important for proper management of the deer herd.

The Safari Club International Foundation has partnered with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Mississippi State University, and the Michigan Involvement Committee of Safari Club International to better understand the impact of predation on deer, while also determining how predation is influenced by winter weather and deer habitat conditions. Michigan: Time Running Out to Repeal State Handgun Registration and Permit System

The Michigan Legislature returned yesterday for the last few weeks of their 2012 legislative session with several pro-gun bills still pending consideration.  House Bill 5225 and its companion bills, legislation that   would eliminate the state handgun “permit-to-purchase” and registration requirements in Michigan, have been languishing in the state Senate for months, so your state Senator and the Senate leadership need to hear from gun owners across Michigan today!  Since the state House passed HB 5225 back in June, the Michigan Senate is the only remaining obstacle to getting this vital bill to the Governor. OK to Bear Arms, but only Inside the Home: Appeals Court

New Yorkers, who wish to exercise their Second Amendment rights by carrying concealed pistols, are out of luck, based on an Appeals Court decision.  Requiring gun owners to obtain concealed-carry permits was in line with the state’s interest in protecting public safety and didn’t run afoul of the Second Amendment, the appeals court ruled.  But, obtaining them is near impossible. The Supreme Court may get this case, which should settle the issue of whether the Heller decision in 2008 only addresses the right to bear arms only applies to inside one’s home.  Crazy stuff is here…

A look inside the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) – the largest and most well-financed anti-hunting group in the world.  For example, grants made by HSUS for the purpose of aiding pet sheltering appear to make up about only 0.25% (one-quarter of one percent) of HSUS’s budget. Procedural Motion Stops Sportsmen’s Act of 2012 in Senate

Fish and wildlife conservation put into jeopardy through partisan politics

Alexandria, VA  – November 27, 2012 – In a surprise upset, the U.S. Senate failed to advance the Sportsmen’s Act of 2012 (S. 3525). After months of discussion with Senate members by a diverse coalition of angling, hunting and conservation organizations to create a historic bill containing 17 key provisions for anglers, hunters and fish and wildlife conservation, the bill failed to pass over a party line vote on a procedural motion.

“The shocking aspect of this bill’s defeat – one that would have such a positive impact on anglers, hunters and fish and wildlife conservation – is that it occurred over a budget argument giving the Secretary of the Interior the ability to increase the duck stamp price $10, thus pumping more dollars into wetland conservation for both fisheries and wildlife benefits” said Gordon Robertson, vice president of the American Sportfishing Association (ASA). Archives of Michigan Has Free, Searchable Census Data

Archives of Michigan offers free, searchable 1894-1994 Michigan census data The Archives of Michigan today announced that more than 62,000 Michigan state census records from 1894 and 1994 are now available to search and print for free at www.seekingmichigan.org.
