Helping Michigan’s Eagles

Earlier this week, along a snow-covered highway near the Schoolcraft-Luce County line, Michigan Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Jason Ruth pulled his vehicle over to the side of the road.

DNR wildlife biologist Kristie Sitar had arrived there in her truck too.

Sometime over the past few days, a vehicle passing the area had struck and killed a white-tailed deer. Crows, ravens and at least one bald eagle had found the carcass and began scavenging meat from the roadkill.

At some point, when a vehicle or vehicles sped past, the adult eagle flushed from the carcass and tried to fly away – likely to a branch in a nearby tree where it could overlook the scene.

But the tremendous bird, with a wingspan of nearly 7 feet, couldn’t gain enough altitude on take-off before it too was struck by passing traffic and thrown down to the side of the road with the force of the impact. Read more

Michigan Lame-Duck Democrats to Make Hunters Pay More

LANSING, MI – For the first time in at least a decade, fees associated with hunting, fishing and boating will most likely jump in Michigan.

Democrats are looking to shore up the state Department of Natural Resources’ budget in the weeks before the close of the hectic lame duck session when they lose their governing trifecta. They’re proposing increasing the cost of boat registration fees and hunting and fishing licenses — in some cases more than 50%.  More here…

In a nutshell, here are the proposed increases, which have already passed committee:

(3) The fee for a base license is as follows:

(a) Subject to subdivision (b), for a resident, $10.00 to$15.00.

(b) For a resident minor child or nonresident minor child, $5.00 to $8.00.

 (c) for a nonresident, $150.00 to $163.00.

NSSF Denounces Coordinated State Effort to Bring ‘Lawfare’ Against Firearm Manufacturer

NSSF®, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, denounces the coordinated “lawfare” effort by Democratic state attorneys general to abuse the judicial system through frivolous claims against a firearm manufacturer. New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin, joined by Minnesota’s Attorney General Keith Ellison along with 13 other states and the District of Columbia, are coordinating and repeating the unfounded claims against GLOCK, Inc., filed by the City of Chicago, which wrongfully colluded with the Biden-Harris White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention and the gun control group Everytown for Gun Safety. That improper collusion is currently under investigation by the U.S. House of Representatives Oversight and Government Accountability Committee.

“This is clearly an abuse of the courts to attempt to circumvent the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA),” said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel. “Attorneys General Platkin and Ellison, along with the other colluding states, are attempting to extend the frivolous claims that have no foundation in law and abuse taxpayer dollars to advance an unconstitutional gun control agenda. These claims are a devious manipulation of the courts by attempting to force a gun control agenda through judicial fiat and are contrary to the will of lawmakers and are expressly prohibited by federal law. This is the very definition of ‘lawfare’ and should be rejected by the courts.”

NSSF previously applauded the House Oversight and Government Accountability Committee for investigating allegations that The White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention collaborated with the antigun billionaire Michael Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety and the City of Chicago to target GLOCK, Inc., with a frivolous lawsuit, alleging the company is responsible for the criminal misuse of firearms when criminals unlawfully attach an illegal “switch” to handguns. Everytown for Gun Safety is representing the City of Chicago in the lawsuit. In previous demands for information, House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) noted, “On the very day the suit was filed, Everytown for Gun Safety President John Feinblatt posted on X, ‘Federal officials recently contacted Glock to discuss implementing new ways to modify Glock pistols to make it harder for Glock switches to be installed. Rather than help, Glock falsely insisted there is nothing they can do.’” Read more

Poacher Sentenced in Court After Unlawful Taking of Clinton County (OH) Trophy Buck

Christopher J. Alexander, 28, of Wilmington, was sentenced today in Clinton County Common Pleas Court for unlawfully shooting a trophy white-tailed deer buck in November 2023, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.

Alexander was sentenced to pay the maximum restitution for the 18-point trophy buck, $35,071.73. This was the largest restitution value for a single white-tailed deer in Ohio’s history. Restitution increased to $39,696.73 when $4,625 was added for a second unlawfully taken buck during the 2023 hunting season.

Alexander was also sentenced to complete five years of community control and serve six months at STAR Community Justice Center, a locked down community based correctional facility. He received a 10-year hunting license revocation and forfeited all property seized as evidence, including the trophy deer’s antlers. Finally, he was ordered to pay $1,000 in fines, $1,000 to the Turn In a Poacher (TIP) program, $2,000 in restitution to media outlets, and all court costs.
