Michigan law enforcement patrols contact more than 700 snowmobilers during busy snowmobiling weekend

Despite frigid temperatures, the Upper Peninsula was the place to be this past weekend for snowmobile enthusiasts, with the International 500 Snowmobile Race in Chippewa County and plenty of good snow elsewhere for riding.

Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officers teamed up with U.S. Forest Service officers, Michigan State Police and local sheriff’s office deputies to conduct “Ride Right” snowmobile safety patrols, which in total contacted more than 700 snowmobilers.

The Ride Right campaign emphasizes the importance of riding sober, at a safe speed and on the right side of the trail.

The patrols will continue for another anticipated busy weekend ahead. Read more

South Florida Bonefish on Drugs

File this one under the more we know, the less we wish we knew.

A three-year study by Florida International University (FIU) and Bonefish & Tarpon Trust (BTT) has discovered pharmaceutical contaminants in the blood and other tissues of bonefish in Biscayne Bay and the Florida Keys.

Since the study began in 2018, FIU scientists and BTT research associates, in partnership with Sweden’s Umeå University and the University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), have sampled 93 fish in South Florida, finding an average of seven pharmaceuticals per bonefish.

One bonefish had an incredible 17 pharmaceuticals in its system! 

The list includes blood pressure medications, antidepressants, prostate treatment medications, antibiotics and pain relievers. Researchers also found pharmaceuticals in bonefish prey—crabs, shrimp and fish—suggesting that many of Florida’s valuable fisheries are exposed, not only the bonefish fishery.

While the amount of the drugs is minimal in most cases, and the level needed to cause harm to the fish is not known at this point, the fact that they are there, and widespread, and that multiple prescription drugs are involved indicates that southeast Florida and the Keys have sewage treatment and waste disposal issues.

According to the USGS, drugs get into U.S. sewage systems both because prescriptions consumed are not fully utilized in the human system and so go into the waste system, and also because most of us flush unused pills down the drain. While treatment gets rid of many of the harmful components of sewage, it evidently does not get rid of the remnant drugs. Louisiana: First Case of CWD Detected at Louisiana/Mississippi Border

BATON ROUGE—The Louisiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Lab (LADDL) in partnership with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries (LDWF) detected Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in deer at the Mississippi/Louisiana border. CWD had not been detected in deer in Louisiana as of February 1, 2022, though it has been detected in 26 states, including three states bordering Louisiana. On February 4, LADDL reported a confirmed CWD case in a deer from Louisiana to LDWF. The specimen for testing came from a hunter-harvested adult buck taken on private land in Tensas Parish. After initial testing by LADDL, the specimen was sent to the National Veterinary Services Laboratories, (NVSL) in Ames, Iowa, which further confirmed the diagnosis.

LADDL received a grant of more than $380,000 entitled “Increase Capacity for Testing for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD)” from the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) USDA Farm Bill for 2022. The purpose of this grant from NAHLN is to increase the CWD testing capacity in Louisiana. In the event CWD is detected in Louisiana, regional sampling rates will be dramatically expanded in an effort to determine prevalence of the disease in the affected area. Statewide CWD surveillance will increase as well. The NAHLN USDA Farm Bill funding will be used to expand LADDL’s immunohistochemistry (IHC) testing capabilities through automation and additional equipment for IHC staining to accommodate future CWD testing needs of LDWF. CCRKBA: “Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrel Wrong About State Preemption”

BELLEVUE, WA – Anti-gun Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell wasted no time in attempting to create a myth early in his tenure when he told reporters Washington is “one of the few states” with a firearms preemption law, and he needs to come clean immediately, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said today.

At his presser, Harrell—a longtime opponent of state preemption, which guarantees uniformity of firearms law from border to border—declared, “You will hear this year me lead efforts on trying to get relief from the exemption RCW 9.41.290. You’ll hear me talking about that. I don’t know how many lives have to be lost before we realize we’re one of the few states that has that kind of restriction allowing the state to govern the laws we need for our city of Seattle.”

“Bruce Harrell needs to reload his brain before shooting his mouth off,” said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. “Forty-two states have preemption laws, and that is hardly ‘a few’ states, as Harrell would have the public believe. Washington was among the first to adopt this law in 1983, and its statute has been used as a model by other states when they adopted similar statutes because they all saw the common sense of gun law uniformity.
