With its headquarters and facilities located on the grounds of the Camp Perry National Guard Training Facility, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) offers marksmanship prospects not only to the those around the country but within the Port Clinton area as well. The wide variety of programs provide something for everyone! Whether an experienced marksman or a beginner who has never fired before, CMP’s educated staff members are always on-site to ensure safety and to welcome those to a sport that’s accessible right in Ohio’s own backyard.

Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center:

The Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center features authentic Olympic memorabilia and other items from the career of celebrated American marksman, Gary Anderson, for observers to enjoy as well as an 80-point indoor electronic air gun range. The climate-controlled facility hosts Open Public Nights every week, where individuals of all ages are welcome to bring their own air rifle or air pistol to fire for practice or fun. Those who are new to the sport and may not own an air gun are welcome to rent one from the CMP during their visit. The air guns use pellets for firing and are easy to handle – no noise or kickback! WSF: Collars for Nebraska Bighorns

Bozeman, Montana- The Wild Sheep Foundation (WSF) and its Chapters and Affiliates flash-raised $160,200 to purchase GPS tracking collars for a scheduled trap and transplant project to enhance bighorn sheep populations in western Nebraska. The appeal came during the final evening of a two-day Summit held in San Antonio, TX, hosted by WSF Affiliate, the Texas Bighorn Society.

“Conservation is a well-used term with a clear and specific meaning,” said Gray N. Thornton, President and CEO of the Wild Sheep Foundation. “The business of conservation, on the other hand, has many moving parts to be successful. It’s not always clear day-to-day that what you’re doing is impactful, but occasionally you get to be part of something magical. Raising this sum of money that quickly and directing it right to wild sheep was magical.”

Nebraska was once home to abundant bighorn sheep populations. By all accounts, they were gone by the early 1900s. Repopulating the Cornhusker State began in 1981 by translocating surplus wild sheep from other states. Today there is an estimated population of 250-275 bighorn sheep. Read more

New High Speed Gear K9 Leads

SWANSBORO, N.C.– High Speed Gear® releases two new K9 leads for working dog handlers.

Earlier this year Sgt. Dawn Jauernik and her K9 Bonito from the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office, inspired High Speed Gear® to create the Bonito 15’ Tracking Lead.

HSGI® has now added the K9 Adjustable Patrol Lead and the K9 Traffic Lead to the product line up. USDA Commits to Big Game Conservation

New USDA-NRCS partnership with Wyoming will focus on conserving big game migratory habitat on private lands.

On Friday May 20, USDA announced a new partnership that uses diverse Farm Bill investments to support voluntary conservation of private working lands and migratory big game populations in Wyoming. Using lessons learned from this pilot, USDA seeks to scale up this model across the West as part of President Biden’s commitment to support voluntary, locally-led conservation efforts to reach the administration’s national conservation goals.

USDA participated in extensive engagement and listening sessions with stakeholders throughout Wyoming and developed this pilot in response to their feedback. Those listening sessions helped guide the pilot’s concepts and principles: recognition of the large scale of this issue in key landscapes, coordination with state agencies, consistency with state policy and direction and support of existing partnerships wherever possible. Eleven Mexican Wolf Pups Journey From Captivity to Join the Wild Population

PHOENIX — Eleven genetically valuable captive-born Mexican wolf pups have been placed into wild dens to be raised in the wild by their surrogate parents after another successful fostering season. Now in its seventh year, the Mexican wolf fostering program continues to help boost the genetic diversity of this endangered subspecies.

Over a three-week period this spring, 11 pups were fostered into five wild packs across New Mexico and Arizona. The pups traveled from captive facilities across the U.S. as part of a coordinated effort to place genetically diverse wolves into the wild population in support of recovery efforts.

Fostering is a proven method used by the Mexican Wolf Interagency Field Team (IFT) to increase genetic diversity in the wild Mexican wolf population. It begins with carefully managed breeding by the Mexican Wolf Species Survival Plan (SSP) program to produce genetically diverse pups within the captive population. Within 14 days of whelping (being born), the captive-born pups are transported to the wild and mixed together with similarly aged wild pups.

Once all of the pups are placed back into the wild den, the breeding female’s maternal instinct kicks in. She will feed and care for both the wild and captive-born pups. With the help of her pack mates, the pups will be raised with the skills and knowledge needed for a life in the wild. The IFT has documented that fostered pups have the same survival rate as wild-born pups in their first year of life (about 50%). Read more
