WEST POINT, MS – The latest episode of “The Specialists” from Mossy Oak Capture features Mossy Oak BioLogic’s Austin Delano as he tells the story of his evolution from a kid who liked to hunt and worked on a farm to an industry-leading and highly respected GameKeeper.</d

Delano’s obsession for growing food plots and big deer started in 2004. A specific buck Delano acquired a picture of captivated his attention to the point of obsession. The picture was of the deer when he was an estimated 3 ½ years old and scored around 120 inches. The buck went on to survive another two years and grew into a true monarch of the the woods when he became a fully mature 5 ½ year old Alabama trophy, scoring in the mid-170 inch range.
“When somebody calls me a food plot specialist, or ‘The Food Plot Guru,’ it’s humbling and I guess I’m proud for someone to think of me that way, but I’ve just been doing this a long time and growing stuff is just part of who I am and what I do,” said Delano. “At the end of the day, I’m just a kid that loves to play in the dirt and watch stuff grow.”

CMP Clinics offer Top Notch Marksmanship Training

Aug 14, 2018

In recognition of National Shooting Sports Month, a look at how the Civilian Marksmanship Program works to help spread the love of shooting sports.

Before the firing of the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s (CMP) National Trophy events, the National Matches schedule offers training clinics for all levels of shooters to receive personalized help and information.

For junior shooters, the United States Marine Corps (USMC) Junior Highpower Rifle Clinic offers one-on-one training, dry firing and class work focused on safety, trigger control, fundamentals and effects of weather, among other things. For those looking for more than the basics, an Advanced CMP Highpower Clinic offers marksmen supplementary training, dry firing exercises and position work.

Many juniors (age 20 and below) attend the USMC clinic year after year, using the opportunity to freshen up their skills before the bigger National Trophy matches, to socialize with other juniors and to receive coaching.

A classroom session is held on the first day of the clinic, during which basic safety and marksmanship fundamentals are covered. Previous attendees are released to Petrarca Range for dry-fire practice, while newer shooters remain in the classroom for additional instruction. When the classroom portion is finished, the classroom juniors join the rest of the clinic participants for snap-in and dry-fire positioning.

The Marines show several examples of their own standing, sitting and prone positions and break them down before having all participants get into their positions and dry fire. Coaches are open to answering questions and to helping each junior find the positions that work best for him or her. Read more
