Senate Bill Would Permanently Remove William Pendley’s Authority to Act as Director of BLM

Pendley, a notorious anti-public lands activist, was stripped of delegated authority with BLM following district court ruling; actions from his tenure face growing scrutiny

MISSOULA, Mont. – Senate legislation introduced today would keep anti-public lands activist William Perry Pendley from resuming his illegal role exercising the authority of director for the Bureau of Land Management, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers announced.

The Public Lands Leadership Act, introduced by Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT), would prevent the Department of Justice from protecting Pendley as the de facto acting director and appealing a district court order that stripped Pendley’s delegated director authority for the BLM. This ruling, issued in September by Judge Brian Morris of the Federal District Court of Montana, ordered Pendley’s removal as BLM head and confirmed that Pendley had been occupying that role unlawfully. The order also called into question any decisions Pendley oversaw during this time and called for a report on all actions undertaken. Morris subsequently issued a second ruling that invalidated three Montana resource management plans approved during Pendley’s tenure. Read more

The Department of Natural Resources is committed to providing Michigan residents the opportunity to share input and ideas on policy decisions, programs and other aspects of natural resource management and outdoor recreation opportunities. One important avenue for this input is at meetings of the public bodies that advise the DNR and, in some cases, also set policies for natural resource management.

With COVID-19 public health and safety in mind, most upcoming meetings have been changed to virtual meetings or conference calls. Frequently check the DNR boards, commissions, committees and councils webpage for updates.

Wildlife Forever and Jay N. Darling Legacy Center Unveil Songbird Art Contest™

White Bear Lake, MN – Wildlife Forever is proud to announce the Songbird Art Contest™ as the newest opportunity to connect the public to the outdoors using the Art of Conservation™. In partnership with the Jay N. Darling Legacy Center based in Des Moines, Iowa, this competition is inspired by the legacy of artist and conservationist Jay Norwood Darling, encouraging participants to learn about North American Songbird Species and inspiring the next generation of stewards.

Throughout history, North America has been home to a tremendous diversity of bird species. Since the 1960s, Songbird populations in North America have dropped 29 percent over historic averages. Three billion birds have been lost and many species of songbirds are at risk of becoming endangered. While one single factor cannot be attributed to these losses, the data is clear that public awareness and education about this critical issue is needed now, more than ever.

The Songbird Art Contest™ will focus on conservation education and will be open to all ages with a strong focus on youth engagement. Participants will be required to submit an original piece of artwork accompanied by an essay detailing the unique characteristics of their chosen bird species and conservation needs. Minnesota: DNR Confiscated Fishing/Hunting Gear Auction Oct. 24

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will hold its second and final auction of confiscated fishing, hunting and trapping equipment on Oct. 24. The auction, which is online in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, includes 252 firearms and 39 bows that were confiscated following serious game and fish violations.

The bidding catalog for the auction will be available online at hillerauction.com by 5 p.m. on Oct. 19, and bidding will begin Oct. 20. The catalog will include a written description and photos of each item. Onsite inspection is available at Hiller Auction Service in Zimmerman from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23. All equipment will be sold as-is, including all defects or faults, known or unknown. Once they’ve been purchased, items cannot be returned. Background checks are required of anyone who purchases a firearm, and items must be picked up in-person.

Revenue from confiscated equipment auctions goes into the Game and Fish Fund, which is the DNR’s primary fund for delivering fish, wildlife and law enforcement programs.
