Eliminate armed guards for the President, Vice-President, and their families, and establish Gun Free Zones around them

Gun Free Zones are supposed to protect our children, and some politicians wish to strip us of our right to keep and bear arms. Those same politicians and their families are currently under the protection of armed Secret Service agents. If Gun Free Zones are sufficient protection for our children, then Gun Free Zones should be good enough for politicians.

Bill Allowing Certain Rifles in Shotgun Zone Moves to Senate

GW:  This bill died last year but should make it through this time around.  Perception can be altered through education, if substantive resistance from the public becomes an issue.  From the MUCC…

Hunters and shooting sports enthusiasts are one step closer to seeing the ability to use a rifle loaded with straight walled pistol cartridges in Michigan’s shotgun zone during the firearm deer season.

In recent weeks, Michigan’s House of Representatives passed HB 4283, sponsored by Rep. Matt Lori (R-Constantine), which would allow a number of certain cartridges to be used in rifles in Michigan’s southern limited firearms area, more commonly called the “shotgun zone” during the firearm deer season. The measure seeks to bring Michigan in line with surrounding states like Indiana, and could potentially get more women and youth participating in firearm season in the shotgun zone. Read more

New Gun Bill Would Harm Youth Hunting

GW:  This is asinine and should get no traction, but here it is from MUCC…

A new gun bill introduced in the Michigan Legislature would apply all current license requirements for acquiring, carrying, possessing or transporting a pistol to all firearms, including restrictions on youth carrying or possessing them outside a target range.

House Bill 4774 was introduced by Rep. Jim Townsend (D – Royal Oak) on May 28, 2013. It literally goes through Michigan’s current law on pistol licensing and background checks, crosses out the word “pistol” and inserts “firearm.” Read more

CA Ban on Traditional Ammo May Lead to Ban on All Hunting Ammo

The California Assembly recently passed a ban on traditional ammunition containing lead that may result in a complete ban on all hunting ammunition.

Assembly Bill 711, which would outlaw the use of lead for hunting in California, passed the State Assembly on May 22nd by a vote of 44-21.  In a twist that presents a threat to all hunting, passage of AB 771 by the California Senate could stop all hunting with rifles as the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) may consider alternative rifle ammunition as “cop killer bullets” triggering a ban on those, as well. Tell Your Senator: Support Conservation Funding!

MUCC
Hunters, anglers and trappers are the original conservationists. We fund Michigan’s conservation efforts through license fees and excise taxes on sporting equipment. Governor Snyder’s proposed license package would simplify the license system and raise over $18 million per year for the habitat and enforcement work that supports our outdoor activities.
As part of the Governor’s license package, the DNR released a list of outcomes from increasing hunting and fishing license revenue, with the bulk going toward additional fish and wildlife habitat work, fish stocking, and more conservation officers. They’re asking for a strategic investment in our state’s fish and wildlife by hunters, anglers and trappers and they’re being open and transparent with how they’ll invest it.
We have an opportunity to maintain, improve and provide more great opportunities to hunt, fish and trap. The bill containing the license structure changes passed the House of Representatives yesterday by an overwhelming bipartisan 77-32 vote. The bill now goes to the Senate. Read more
