Yesterday, the Michigan House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to repeal the state handgun “permit-to-purchase” and registration requirements. House Bill 5225 passed in the state House by a 74 to 36 vote. HB 5225 would repeal the bureaucratic state “permit-to-purchase” handguns and instead utilize the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System. House Bill 5498 and House Bill 5499 also passed in the state House along with HB 5225. These three bills now go to the state Senate where they will be assigned to the appropriate committees. The Department of Natural Resources will, starting June 11, temporarily close portions of the Rose Lake State Wildlife Area shooting range in Clinton County for the construction of a new handgun range. During construction the rifle and pistol area will be closed on weekdays and open on Saturdays and Sundays. The archery and hand trap area will remain open on regularly scheduled days. Work is scheduled to be completed by Thursday, July 12. Read more
The DNR shooting ranges will have clay throwers available on Sundays in June. The ranges are open Thursday-Monday. The Ortonville and Pontiac Lake ranges are open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and the Rose Lake and Sharonville ranges are open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Read more

Getting ready for hunting season always seems to be a seasonal ritual. Annually, many hunters get the hunting firearm out of its storage place, grab some ammo, and shoot just enough rounds to perforate a few paper targets and declare, “Good enough.” But, that style of “preparation” has a way of developing excuses afield, where there are no do-overs or instant replays to analyze.
