Papa John’s Pizza stands by employee who shot armed robber in self defense

A Papa John’s employee was making a delivery in Decatur, Ga.,  when a man approached her vehicle, forcing her onto the ground at gunpoint.  The woman, who had a gun in her pocket, was able to fire at the man while on the ground — striking the alleged assailant in the face.

An apparent accomplice stole the woman’s vehicle while all this was going on.  Bottom line:  Papa John’s won’t terminate the employee.  Details here…

SCOTUS Urged to Take Up San Francisco Gun Control Case

ROSEVILLE, CA – The Firearms Policy Coalition and 12 other state and national civil rights organizations filed a brief in the United States Supreme Court today for a lawsuit challenging a San Francisco gun control ordinance.

According to the plaintiffs’ petition for review, the city’s law “requires all residents who keep handguns in their homes for self-defense to stow them away in a lock box or disable them with a trigger lock whenever they are not physically carrying them on their persons.”

In the amicus (“friend of the court”) brief filed by attorneys Bradley Benbrook and Stephen Duvernay, the gun-rights groups argue that summary reversal of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals’ decision “is warranted because [it] is plainly contrary to Heller,” a landmark 2008 ruling that held the Second Amendment protects an individual-rather than a collective-right to keep and bear arms. But the groups also argue that the Supreme Court should hear the case in order to “clarify the standard governing Second Amendment challenges, and to confirm that courts must be guided by text and history rather than judicial interest balancing.” Read more

Preparing for Violence

If the recent events in Paris have proven anything, it’s that terrorism and violence have no boundaries. Incidents like this erupt without warning and those who are not prepared will be forced to sit dumbstruck and wait for help. This help may not arrive in time to save lives. The question we now raise is this: What are you prepared to do?

Even if you feel you are mentally prepared to deal with a violent attack, you will still need the proper equipment to save your life and possibly the lives of others. Below is a brief checklist that will allow you to see just how prepared you really are for the day you will never forget.

PERSONAL PROTECTION

If you plan on using a gun for protection, that gun must be with you at the time the attack starts. You will not have time to go get your gun once the attack begins. Some people claim to have a sidearm on their person in hopes of using that sidearm to fight their way to a long gun, which they believe is a better tool in a deadly force encounter. Regardless of what tool you intend to use in a fight, that tool must be ready for immediate action. Read more

Michigan Dometic Violence and Personal Protection Orders Bill Pending Signature

This from MCRGO…

Senate Bill 789

Senate Bill 789, reforms Michigan’s concealed pistol licensing process, eliminates county gun boards and makes Michigan a true shall-issue state. It has still not been acted on by Governor Snyder. The bill was presented to the governor on December 31. Snyder has until this Wednesday, January 14, to either sign the bill or veto the bill. If he does not act on it, the bill will be pocket vetoed. The former legislature, no longer in session, cannot override the veto.

Over the past week, misinformation has been publicized regarding SB 789’s impact on victims of violence and potential victims of violence. This misinformation is inaccurate and is either politically-motivated, or based on a failure to evaluate the legislation in its entirety, the context of all applicable state and federal laws, and their practical application in our legal system.

SB 789 is a process-only reform bill that retains and actually strengthens Michigan’s CPL eligibility standards, among – if not -the strongest of any “shall issue” state in the nation. It ensures action against a concealed pistol license (CPL) following criminal charges, a conviction, or a firearms restriction personal protection order (PPO) is immediate, automatic and does not require deliberative action by gun boards. It has absolutely no impact on a victim’s ability to obtain a PPO. It enhances the ability of actual or potential victims of violence to protect themselves using all tools afforded by the legal system, including a CPL; and it updates the CPL law to conform to federal protections for private medical records. Michigan: Governor Snyder Signs Concealed Pistol Licensing Reform Into Law

Governor Rick Snyder (R) has signed Senate Bills 789 and 790 into law.  These important pro-gun bills create a more efficient, consistent and expedient concealed pistol licensing process through the creation of a true “shall issue” licensing system for all statutorily eligible Michiganders.

This legislation eliminates county concealed weapon licensing boards as well as the discretionary licensing authority currently held by those boards.  With the elimination of the county licensing boards, county clerks will administer the concealed weapon licensing process.  Background checks that are statutorily required to obtain a Concealed Pistol License (CPL) will be conducted by the Michigan State Police (MSP). However, the MSP would not retain the discretionary authority currently held by the county licensing boards because SB 789 mandates that all persons who statutorily qualify for a CPL (i.e. not prohibited under 28.425b and satisfy all financial and submission obligations) would receive a license.
