Big news came out over the holidays when the ASPCA announced that it would pay Feld Entertainment, owner of the Ringling Bros. circus, almost $10 million to settle a federal lawsuit accusing the ASPCA and others of violating the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act. It’s a crack in the defense, and we’re sure that leaders of the Humane Society of the United States—which is still a defendant in the litigation—didn’t sleep well that night.  Keep reading here…

Five Decades for the Birds

For me, watching birds has been a lifelong pastime, having done so for over 50 years.  The fascination began during early childhood with parakeets raised by my grandparents. My mother would spend hours on end coaxing them to repeat silly phrases until they got it right.  We never had any cats, so the winged wonders had free reign of the house, until they were put to bed in their cages and covered up for the night.  Some would “talk” – usually the males – and one would fly to the kitchen faucet to frolic in the running water.  Another would play in a stick of butter anytime it would be put on the table. New Young Birders Network Launched

Ithaca, NY-Teen birders now have a place to go online to connect with peers and drill down into a wealth of birding resources, as well as explore college and career opportunities. The Young Birders Network (www.youngbirdersnetwork.net), launched by the Cornell Lab of Ornithologyand Ohio’s Black Swamp Bird Observatory, serves as a hub for the many young birding clubs sprouting up across the country, while providing an online community for teens to share information and learn more about birding. Mexican wolf scheduled for January release in Arizona

PHOENIX — An adult male Mexican wolf, designated M1133, may soon be exploring its new territory in the Apache National Forest of east-central Arizona. The Mexican Wolf Reintroduction Project’s interagency field team (IFT) recently received approval from Dr. Benjamin Tuggle, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s (Service) Regional Director, in coordination with the Arizona Game and Fish Department, to conduct this initial (a wolf born and raised in captivity) release in mid-January adjacent to the Bluestem pack to replace the pack’s alpha male that was illegally killed last summer.
