A package of bills just introduced has bipartisan support and will benefit habitat, access, and conservation funding

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Only hours ahead of their departure for the Fourth of July recess, Senator John Barrasso (R-WY), Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD), and a bipartisan group of senators introduced S. 1514, a strong package of bills that would benefit fish and wildlife habitat nationwide, while funding critical watershed restoration efforts in the Mid-Atlantic and improving access for recreational shooters on public lands.

The legislation would include the following:

  • Reauthorize the North American Wetlands Conservation Act—a grant program through which each federal dollar invested is matched an average of three times over by non-federal dollars—at $50 million annually through 2022.
  • Authorize the National Fish Habitat Conservation Act, which was created to foster partnerships that improve conditions for fish species and enhance recreational fishing opportunities.
  • Reauthorize the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, the nation’s largest conservation grant-maker.
  • Reauthorize Chesapeake Bay restoration program at $90 million per year through 2022.Senators Introduce the Strongest Legislative Package of Sportsmen’s Priorities in Years

“What makes this effort different from sportsmen’s packages of the more recent past is that, right from the outset, it deals with meaningful conservation priorities by reauthorizing and instituting programs that will actually enhance fish and wildlife populations, habitat, and access,” says Whit Fosburgh, president and CEO of the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership. “We applaud Sen. Barrasso, Sen. Cardin, Sen. Boozman, Sen. Klobuchar, Sen. Capito, and Sen. Baldwin for their leadership and recognition of what American hunters and anglers value.” Read more

NSSF and Responsive Management Release Handbook to Increase Participation in Outdoor Recreation

The last century has seen a multitude of wildlife conservation success stories thanks to the efforts of the professional fish and wildlife management community. The restoration of once depleted species such as the white-tailed deer, wild turkey, bald eagle, wood duck, and Rocky Mountain elk, to name only a few, was no accident, nor was it the result of guesswork or management through blind optimism. Rather, these once-struggling populations successfully rebounded because biologists and resource managers applied scientific principles dictated by the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation.

The same governing principle—the use of sound science to dictate policy—also applies to the work now being done to increase participation in and support for hunting, fishing, sport shooting, and archery: R3 (recruitment, retention, and reactivation) efforts must be based on high-quality research and a solid foundation of fact. SIG SAUER® Introduces MCX VIRTUS

Advanced Modularity and Design Results in More than 500 Configurations

Newington, NH – SIG SAUER, Inc., The Complete Systems Provider™, unveils the MCX VIRTUS in 5.56 NATO and 300 BLK, a platform engineered and built to be the most adaptive, accurate and longest-lasting rifle available.

The original SIG MCX rifle, conceived for the demands of the Special Operations community, quickly became known in the firearms world because of its durable performance and end-user configurability. To enhance the design, SIG received feedback from Special Operations units throughout the world and made the most advanced rifle ever built, even better. The result is the MCX VIRTUS.

“SIG has supplied firearms to meet the unique demands of specialized units for decades,” said Ron Cohen, President and CEO of SIG SAUER. “Similar to the P320® pistol, the MCX VIRTUS was created to be the ultimate modular platform, a design that will change the demands of the modern rifle for years to come.”

In ancient Rome, “Virtus” stood for virtue, courage, bravery and excellence. The MCX VIRTUS embodies the spirit of the professional users who have depended on and continue to rely on the MCX in the field. The added features and enhancements of the MCX VIRTUS include increasing accuracy, delivering additional modularity and providing a service life of more than 20,000 rounds, all without a single part replacement. Between barrels, stocks, handguards and colors, the MCX VIRTUS can be configured over 500 different ways for any possible need or mission.

Available in Patrol, Pistol and SBR variants, in Stealth Gray or FDE color, the MCX VIRTUS utilizes the proven SIG SAUER short-stroke piston system and unique internal recoil system that eliminates the M4-style buffer tube. The result is a compact, light-recoiling platform that can be configured for any task.

Cold hammer-forged barrels, available in 9″, 11.5″ and 16″ lengths, feature an advanced interchangeable design and can be exchanged at the operator level. To increase accuracy, the barrels are of a heavier contour profile. Also assisting with accuracy is the new SIG Matchlite Duo trigger, a two-stage unit that provides the shooter with a crisp, clean feel. A new tapered bolt lug design results in smoother cycling and extends the bolt life. Capping off the upgrades are eight (8) new free-floating M-LOK handguards available in standard and suppressor-ready configurations. Read more
