NSSF Cites 17 Percent Drop in Unintentional Firearms Fatalities

NEWTOWN, Conn. – The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) applauds the work of responsible firearm owners for helping to keep guns out of the wrong hands, as it shares the latest data regarding unintentional fatalities involving firearms. The National Safety Council’s “Injury Facts-2017 Edition” shows a 17 percent decrease in accidents involving firearms from 2014 to 2015, a year in which firearms sales soared.

This decline to 489 unintentional firearms-related fatalities is the lowest total since record-keeping began in 1903 and accounts for less than 1 percent (three-tenths of 1 percent) of the 146,571 accident deaths from all listed causes, which were up 8 percent from 2014 to 2015. This decrease, which was the largest percentage decline of any category, came in a year that saw record high firearms sales to many millions of Americans. Read more

Arizona GFD Wildlife Assets to Be Auctioned at Outdoor Expo This Weekend


Antlers, hides, head mounts and more will be in high demandPHOENIX —The Arizona Game and Fish Department will auction its annual collection of wildlife assets March 25-26 during the 2017 Outdoor Expo at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility, just west of Interstate 17 on Carefree Highway. Admission and parking are free.

More than 100 sets of antlers, hides, skulls and head mounts, as well as wildlife artwork and taxidermy – all seized during law enforcement investigations, obtained from animals killed in vehicle collisions, or acquired through donations — will be sold. Items can be purchased individually, by the pound or through a silent auction.

While a detailed list of assets is unavailable at this time, the department soon will be posting photos on Instagram (www.instagram.com/gf_assets) as examples of some of the individual items that will be auctioned during the two-day sale. Once the expo gets underway, photos of many of the assets will be posted for the benefit of those tracking their bids or wanting to see what items become available throughout the day. Read more

Ithaca, N.Y.—Around the country, birds are singing, partnering up, and looking for great nesting sites. Spring is a busy time of year for birds, and they are much more visible as they flit about their activities. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology welcomes anyone who finds a bird’s nest of any species to report their observations to NestWatch, a free citizen-science project focused on breeding birds.

“I joined the NestWatch program for the 2016 season and monitored six nest boxes that housed three different species,” says Diane Cherbak, a citizen scientist and active bird watcher. “I was happy to find the NestWatch program so I could stay involved in bird watching throughout the summer months.”

Participants report the location of a nest, the species using it, number of eggs laid, and other important milestones as the birds incubate, raise, and fledge their young. Register for the project at NestWatch.org. Read more

SCI Applauds Dismissal of Challenge to Lead Ammunition Use in Kaibab National Forest

For the second time, a district court in Arizona has dismissed a lawsuit by the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD) that attacked the use of lead-based ammunition in a National Forest.  CBD’s suit claimed that the Forest Service violated the Resources Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), a federal law involving disposal of solid waste, by not taking action to ban the use of lead-based ammunition on the Kaibab National Forest.  SCI and the National Rifle Association jointly participated in the case as intervenors to defend the U.S. Forest Service.

If successful, CBD’s lawsuit would have set a dangerous precedent that the use of lead-based ammunition for hunting violates RCRA.  Such a finding potentially would subject state, federal, and tribal governments who allow such ammunition use to serious liability under RCRA.  CBD and other anti-hunting groups could have used that precedent to attack the use of lead-based ammunition in other locations across the country, possibly leading to bans on the use of this type of ammunition.

The Court dismissed CBD’s case based on its conclusion that any ruling it could give would qualify as “advisory.”  The Court explained that courts are not supposed to give “advice” to federal agencies on how they should exercise their authority and discretion.   CBD now has three options for continuing its case:  (1) request reconsideration from the Court, (2) revise their lawsuit to try to address the Court’s ruling, or (3) appeal the decision to the Ninth Circuit.  The third option is the most likely.  Whatever happens, SCI and the NRA will be there to continue to defend against this attack on traditional hunting.  In the meantime, we will enjoy this victory.
