Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park Announces Tours for 2024 Season

Tours offered starting May 1

Staff at Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park are pleased to reopen the cave for the 2024 season starting May 1.

Tours will be offered from May 1 through Sept. 30. Both first-come-first-served tours and reservable tours will be offered. Visitors are encouraged to check the website frequently as tour options, times and availability may change throughout the season. Reservable tours are available from May 24 through Labor Day. During the season, the upper visitor area will be open and cave tours will be offered seven days a week. The gate opens at 8:30 a.m. and the ticket office opens at 9 a.m.

The campground and trails are open, and the showers, comfort station and water stations will reopen as weather allows. Read more

“Engaged in the Business as a Dealer in Firearms” – Final Rule Notification

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) sent the following notice this afternoon regarding firearm storage at FFLs. Please review the notice in its entirety.

On April 10, 2024, the Attorney General signed ATF’s final rule, Definition of “Engaged in the Business” as a Dealer in Firearms, amending ATF’s regulations in title 27, Code of Federal Regulations (“CFR”), part 478. The final rule implements the provisions of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (“BSCA,” effective June 25, 2022), which broadened the definition of when a person is considered “engaged in the business” as a dealer in firearms (other than a gunsmith or pawnbroker). The Final Rule clarifies that definition.

This final rule incorporates BSCA’s definitions of “predominantly earn a profit” and “terrorism,” and amends the regulatory definitions of “engaged in the business as a dealer other than a gunsmith or pawnbroker” and “principal objective of livelihood and profit” to ensure each conforms with the BSCA’s statutory changes and can be relied upon by the public.

Firearm Industry Members Ask U.S. Supreme Court to Review Mexico’s $10 Billion Lawsuit

Firearm industry members targeted by Mexico’s $10 billion lawsuit petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to review the case that seeks to blame them for the harm caused by lawless narco-terrorist drug cartels in Mexico. Mexico’s lawsuit also seeks to dictate how firearms are made and sold throughout the United States through a federal court injunction, in effect usurping the role of Congress and 50 state legislatures. The industry defendants in Estados Unidos Mexicanos v. Smith & Wesson Brands, Inc., et al., have asked the Supreme Court to consider two questions – whether the lawful production and sale of firearms in the United States is the “proximate cause” of alleged injuries to the Mexican government stemming from cartel-driven violence and if that also amounts to “aiding and abetting” illegal firearms trafficking because Mexico alleges these manufacturers know their products are unlawfully trafficked.

The Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA) precludes frivolous lawsuits against the firearm industry for damages caused by the criminal and unlawful acts of remote third parties. A U.S. District court dismissed the case, finding the claims were barred by the PLCAA. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, however, revived the case on Mexico’s appeal, holding Mexico’s claims alleging that the defendants know their regular business practices contribute to illegal firearm trafficking fit within a narrow exception to the PLCAA. U.S. Military Academy at West Point Defends Title at 2024 SIG SAUER Relentless Warrior Championship

SIG SAUER, Inc. is honored to announce the conclusion of the Fifth Annual SIG Relentless Warrior Championship. On April 5th and 6th, 2024, one hundred and thirteen cadets from the United States Air Force Academy, United States Naval Academy, United States Coast Guard Academy, United States Military Academy at West Point, Norwich University, Texas A & M, The Citadel, Virginia Military Institute, Virginia Tech, the Royal Military College of Canada, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy competed in the SIG Relentless Warrior Championship at the SIG SAUER Academy in Epping, New Hampshire followed by an award banquet featuring Medal of Honor recipient Sergeant Major Thomas P. Payne as the guest speaker.

The course of fire consisted of six mission stages that tested the marksmanship and leadership skills of these future military leaders. For the fourth year in a row, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point Combat Weapons Team defended their title to earn the honor of 2024 SIG Relentless Warrior Champion.

Grand Reopening May 2: Historic Tawas Point Lighthouse

GW:  Funding through $455,500 in federal COVID-19 relief funding from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 – more borrowed money to fuel inflation.

After extensive restoration work, the Tawas Point Lighthouse – located in Tawas Point State Park in East Tawas, Michigan – is set to reopen soon for the spring/summer season, but the public can get a sneak peek at a grand reopening Thursday, May 2 – a fitting date that marks 147 years since a light first shone from the tower’s lantern room onto Tawas Bay and Lake Huron.

The event, running from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., will kick off with the official reopening ceremony. Following the ceremony, visitors can check out a variety of vendor booths, including the Tawas Bay Art Gallery, Heritage Coast Sailing and Rowing and Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, enjoy live music and lunch from local food trucks, browse the gift shop and take a FREE tour of the lighthouse.
