DANVILLE, Ala. (May 4, 2015) – With the introduction of the new Bow and Gear Hoist, HSS has addressed the issue of how to safely, silently and quickly get a bow or other gear into a treestand. The Bow and Gear Hoist is lightweight, easy-to-use and virtually tangle free, as there are no ropes or cords to contend with.

Weighing in at only 3.17 ounces, the new Bow and Gear Hoist measures just 3.75 X 3.2 inches, and is small enough to store in a back pocket. It features a 2-inch carabiner with a rubber coating on the large end to deaden sound, and a swivel attachment allows bows or gear to spin freely to prevent binding of the ribbon.

To use, simply attach your bow to the Bow and Gear Hoist’s carabiner, use the clip on the back to attach it to your belt—or place it in a secure pocket—and begin your climb. The ribbon will unwind, practically unnoticed during your accent. Once in the treestand, use the ribbon to raise your bow hand-over-hand. Then, just wind the ribbon back into its sturdy polymer case. To lower your bow, simply clip it to the carabiner again and lower it to the ground allowing the ribbon to slowly slide through your fingers. Knife Rights Update on the Freddie Gray Knife Arrest

Gilbert, AZ: In the case of the arrest on a knife charge and subsequent death of Freddie Gray in Baltimore, Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby charged that Freddie Gray was falsely arrested and that the knife in his pocket was not an illegal switchblade. Mosby is filing murder charges against one officer while others are being charged with crimes including manslaughter and assault.

According to news reports and court documents, Freddie Gray was arrested after a police officer supposedly found a “switchblade” in his pocket. But, the court documents reveal something else: “The officer noticed a knife clipped to the inside of his front right pants pocket. The defendant was arrested without force or incident,” the documents say. “The knife was recovered by this officer and found to be a spring-assisted, one-hand-operated knife.” (Emphasis added.) Note that the officer did not refer to the knife as a “switchblade.” Read more

Spring stocking effort keeps DNR fisheries staffers on their toes

As the Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ statewide fish-stocking biologist, it’s VanDerLaan’s job to get the annual hatchery production – in the vicinity of 18 million fish weighing 395 tons – out to the state’s lakes and streams during a roughly eight-week window.

He has plenty of help. Ed Eisch, who works out of the Platte River State Fish Hatchery and supervises the six-hatchery system, is in charge of raising the fish. Christian LeSage, a fisheries biologist who works out of Lansing, is in charge of allocating them. And a handful of workers load and drive the trucks. But VanDerLaan is in charge of getting them where they belong. Read more

Maple River State Game Area Update

 

Things are shaping up nicely at the Maple River State Game Area Wetlands Unit this spring!

The last two springs have brought excessive amounts of rain, which caused the Maple River to remain at flood stage well into the late spring/early summer. The Maple River State Game Area Wetlands Unit, located north of St. Johns on U.S. 127, is a designated flood storage area.

“Things are looking pretty good so far this spring. It was pretty dry until we received about 3 inches of rain in early April,” said Chad Fedewa, DNR wildlife biologist for Gratiot, Clinton, Ingham and Shiawassee counties. “That heavy rain flooded some of our crop units, but the river has already receded enough that we should be able to start pumping out water soon.” Read more

Lake St. Clair Boaters, Anglers Urged to Watch Out for Survey Markers

The Department of Natural Resources has begun its annual spring survey on Lake St. Clair’s Anchor Bay and needs boaters and anglers to be aware of the locations of nets used for the survey.

The survey, conducted by the DNR’s Lake St. Clair Fisheries Research Station, started April 27 and will run through May 19. The primary purpose of the survey is to assess the status of recreationally important fish populations in the lake. Read more

NSSF’s Annual Boy Scouts Grant Program Kicks Into Gear

NEWTOWN, Conn. – As part of an annual program that encourages youth participation in the shooting sports, the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) is once again partnering with Boy Scouts of America Councils. This year’s program makes available $100,000 in funding, double the amount of previous years. Successful BSA Council grant applicants can receive a portion of those grant funds provided by NSSF to develop or expand their troop activities in target shooting and marksmanship. Target shooting programs rank among Scouting’s most popular activities, teaching marksmanship, firearms and range safety, teamwork building and fundraising skills.

“Now in its fifth year, NSSF’s BSA Council Grant Program has an enormous impact in encouraging both local council leaders and their troop members to further their firearms safety education and sharpen their marksmanship skills,” said Samantha Pedder, NSSF Manager, Outreach and Diversity. “These grants continue the mutually supportive relationship the Boy Scouts of America have long shared with NSSF and they are yet another way NSSF is able to further its mission of promoting, protecting and preserving hunting and the shooting sports.” Read more
