MI DNR awards $695,500 in Land and Water Conservation Fund grants

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources Thursday announced that 10 community parks and recreation facilities across the state will share $695,500 in Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) grants. The federal LWCF program, administered in Michigan by the DNR, supports cities, counties and townships in their efforts to provide better public outdoor recreation opportunities for their residents. Michigan: Bill to Expand Safe and Responsible Firearm Training for Michigan Youth Unanimously Passed in House Committee

Today, the Michigan House Natural Resources Committee unanimously passed House Bill 5085 with recommendation.  
If passed and enacted into law, HB 5085 would reasonably expand the class of individuals who are allowed to supervise and instruct Michigan’s youth in the safe use of pistols.

Under current Michigan law, an individual under the age of 18 is prohibited from possessing a pistol “for the purposes of target practice or instruction in the safe use,” unless the “person’s parent or guardian is physically present and supervising the person.”

As a result, responsible family members, close friends, range instructors and youth organizations—such as the Boy Scouts of America—are all effectively precluded from supervising and instructing in the safe use of a pistol in a controlled environment. Read more

Petition Drive Launched to Protect Hunting, Fishing Rights

MUCC Michigan United Conservation Clubs is proud to announce the launch of a petition drive to protect our outdoor heritage from out-of-state anti-hunters. MUCC is part of a coalition of conservation organizations called the Citizens for Professional Wildlife Management that is working to pass a citizen-initiated law to ensure that Michigan’s fish and wildlife are managed with sound science. And we need over 300,000 signatures to do it.  Read more

14 Year Old Takes 200 Class Buck

Not many 14-year-old boys can say they’ve harvested a 200-class buck, but Matthew Allen of Canton, Texas, can.  Last year, Allen became a Boone and Crockett Jack S. Parker Generation Next award winner along with other young people who’ve taken outstanding trophy animals over the past few years.
The awards, which were presented during the Boone and Crockett Club 28th Big Game Awards, July 17-20 in Reno, Nev., honor youth who recently took a Boone and Crockett record-book trophy.
