Volunteers with Michigan United Conservation Clubs and local Department of Natural Resources staff members recently spent a day together giving “hare cuts” on public land in the Grayling Forest Management Unit as part of an effort to improve wildlife habitat.

“Snowshoe hares are a type of rabbit here in the northern areas of Michigan, and a lot of folks have great memories hunting them,” said DNR wildlife biologist Brian Piccolo. “Unfortunately, snowshoe hare populations have steadily declined over the past few decades, and research suggests that this decline is due partially to shorter winters and less snow cover due to climate change.”

Snowshoe hares differ from the more common eastern cottontail rabbit in several ways – they have longer ears and bigger hind feet than the cottontail, and one other unique trait.

“Snowshoe hares have the ultimate adaptation for survival by being able to completely change the color of their fur to adapt to their surroundings,” said Piccolo.

Snowshoes are a brownish-cinnamon color in the summer and will molt, or grow new white fur, in the winter. While many animals molt, most do not change their color so drastically. The white fur gives snowshoe hares great camouflage when snow is on the ground. If there is little or no snow cover during the winter months, having white fur against a brown background can lead to increased detection by predators. Read more

MidwayUSA Foundation Provides Nearly $1.5 Million in Grants

Columbia, MO – The MidwayUSA Foundation has wrapped up another successful grant cycle and 475 youth shooting teams will be receiving funds to use for team expenses. The total payout was over $1.4 million, the largest grant cycle to date for the Foundation.

Dick Leeper, MidwayUSA Foundation Executive Director said, “These grant funds will help over 15,000 athletes continue their passion for shooting sports. Many teams rely on these funds to help pay for ammunition, targets, entry fees, travel to shoots and more. It is our hope to see more teams apply and receive grants in the future.”

Grants are provided through the Team Endowment Account Program, offered by the MidwayUSA Foundation. Teams with a balance in their Team Endowment Account are eligible to apply for a grant once per year by completing the MidwayUSA Foundation grant application. Grant deadlines are June 15 and December 15 and teams can receive up to 5% of their account balance. Read more

Coast Guard Seizes 3 Miles of Illegal Long Line Set by Mexican Fishermen

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Coast Guard crews seized a total of approximately 3 miles of long line fishing gear set by multiple Mexican fishermen operating illegally in U.S. waters Jan. 30.

Last night, Coast Guard Cutter Amberjack sighted multiple vessels moving at a high rate of speed southwards the maritime border. Unable to interdict the vessels, Amberjack returned to the vicinity of initial sighting, where crewmembers removed 700 yards of long line gear late last night and recovered an additional 4,400 yards this morning. The majority of the gear was found approximately 35 miles off the coast of South Texas.

Each mile of long line has scores of baited hooks and is capable of catching hundreds of fish per mile set. The seized lines contained 175 red snapper, 16 sharks, 3 stingrays and several other reef fish. Approximately 170 of these fish were found alive and released at sea. Read more
