Savage Announces Latest Episode of Savage Journeys: The Duren Family Farm

WESTFIELD, Massachusetts – June 23, 2023 – Savage Arms announces the release of its latest Savage Journeys episode: The Duren Family Farm. This complete story, by Savage Journeys and Savage Arms Affiliate Doug Duren, follows the 400 acre farm that’s revolutionizing conservation and community. This farm has been in Duren’s family for 120 years, and is located near Cazenovia, in a portion of southwest Wisconsin known as the Driftless Area. The farm contains extensive farming and wood spaces–it’s here that Duren encourages conservation through a new project. One that allows visitors access to his land in exchange for their assistance with maintenance and management projects on the farm.

Viewers can follow along as Duren provides the backstory on this farming and hunting project that is thriving on his family’s land. He attributes the project’s success to its values, which are rooted in the works of Aldo Leopold. Many people know Leopold as a pioneer in wildlife conservation and are familiar with his life story and major accomplishments. Leopold’s collection of essays “A Sand County Almanac” is iconic in many conservation, environmental and hunting communities–and Duren will be the first to agree with its importance.

“Leopold, that little book, and his other essays have continued to speak to me throughout my life,” Duren said. He adds that, “Leopold and a fascinating project: The Riley Game Cooperative,” were a great inspiration to this experiment in conservation on his farm. “At Riley, Leopold and some folks from town became friends with a group of local farmers. They worked together to improve marginal land for all wildlife, especially game species. Cooperatively they shared the work, the hunting and recreation benefits of their efforts.” This Riley Game Cooperative is greatly similar to the operation run by Duren, shown in this Savage Journeys story. Reaction to Senate Failure to Block Pistol Brace Rule

Erich Pratt, GOA’s Senior Vice President, issued the following statement:

“It’s incredibly disappointing that, despite an outpouring of grassroots opposition to the rule, the Senate concurred with President Biden and voted to make their constituents felons. Gun Owners of America will continue to fight back in the Courts, where we have already seen some strong success. The fight will go on.”

Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel:

“This vote was disappointing, if not expected. We are deeply troubled by the unchecked growth of the administrative state that threatens our fundamental rights and liberty.”

Gun Owners of America’s Reaction to Senate Failure to Block Pistol Brace Rule

Washington, D.C. – Yesterday, the U.S. Senate failed to block the Biden Pistol Brace Rule under the Congressional Review Act. The final vote, which was split along party lines, was 50-49. During debate, Democratic Majority Leader Chuck Schumer spread disinformation about pistol braced firearms, claiming that they convert pistols into machineguns. Read more

NSSF Condemns USFWS Proposed Rule to Ban Traditional Ammunition, Fishing Tackle on New Refuge Openings

WASHINGTON, D.C. — NSSF®, The Firearm Industry Trade Association, condemns the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Proposed Rule that would ban the use of traditional lead ammunition on 48 new distinct hunting opportunities across approximately 3,000 acres of National Wildlife Refuges (NWRs). This is another illustration of the Biden administration’s Department of the Interior (DOI) and USFWS kowtowing to anti-hunting activists by promulgating policies that lack sound scientific data.

“This is the latest example of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service creating rules that punish hunters, threaten conservation funding and advance special interests without sound scientific evidence that traditional lead ammunition is causing detrimental wildlife population impacts,” said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel. “This administration is ignoring its promise to ‘follow the science.’ In fact, it is ignoring the need for scientific evidence in order to advance an antigun and anti-hunting agenda. The need for Congress to pass the Protecting Access for Hunters and Anglers Act has never been more urgent.”

The USFWS announced three national wildlife refuges are proposing to expand opportunities for hunting. These refuges are Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge in Alabama, Everglades Headwaters National Wildlife Refuge in Florida and Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge in Minnesota. The proposed rule, appearing in the Federal Register, includes proposals to phase out lead ammunition at eight national wildlife refuges. USFWS claims to follow the best available science yet offers no peer-reviewed site-specific scientific data to demonstrate traditional ammunition is causing detrimental wildlife population impacts. House Committee Advances Top CSF Access Priorities Impacting Millions of Sportsmen and Women

(Washington, D.C.) – Wednesday, the House Natural Resources Committee passed two significant pieces of legislation for the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation (CSF), the Protecting Access for Hunters and Anglers Act (H.R. 615) and the Duck Stamp Modernization Act (H.R. 2872).

These pieces of legislation were developed with input from CSF and are spearheaded by Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus (CSC) Member Rep. Rob Wittman and CSC Co-Chair Rep. Garret Graves. Prior to the Committee vote, CSF sent an alert to the Committee urging CSC Members to vote yes on both pieces of legislation. CSF also sent a letter to the Committee in May in strong support of these bills.

“These bills are common-sense, community priorities impacting millions of sportsmen and women across the nation and we thank the House Natural Resources Committee for prioritizing sportsmen and women by voting these two important CSF priorities out of Committee,” said Jeff Crane, CSF President and CEO. “The passing of priorities such as these are a testament to the continued leadership and dedication of the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus to our nation’s sporting community.”

The Protecting Access for Hunters and Anglers Act would prohibit the Secretaries of Agriculture and the Interior from banning the use of lead ammunition and fishing tackle on select federal lands and waters unless certain science-based and state agency triggers are met. Specifically, the federal lands of focus include lands and waters managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Bureau of Land Management, and the U.S. Forest Service.

H.R. 615 would ensure that restrictions concerning lead ammunition or fishing tackle are supported by sampling data that demonstrates a negative fish and wildlife population impact for a specific unit of land or water. Secondly, any restrictions on the use of lead ammo and tackle must be consistent with the regulations of the impacted state fish and wildlife agency. Lastly, any restriction on the use of lead ammunition and tackle within the federal lands of focus must have the support of the respective state fish and wildlife agency.

The Duck Stamp Modernization Act is a bipartisan bill that will modernize the federal duck stamp process by allowing hunters to have an electronic Federal Duck Stamp on their smart phone for the entirety of the hunting season. Read more

Buck Knives: Sharpness Equals Cutlery Success

POST FALLS, ID— Buck Knives, Inc., a global leader in the outdoor, sporting, and everyday carry (EDC) knife markets, checks each knife it manufactures for a sharp blade edge before it leaves the factory. The company wants knife owners to be safe—and successful—when using a knife and offers a wide range of tips, products and services to assist with keeping a knife’s blade sharp.

The first resource for sharpening a knife is the Buck Knives website and detailed information on how to sharpen a knife: How to Sharpen Your Knife – Buck® Knives OFFICIAL SITE (buckknives.com). The website offers guidelines for selecting and using the right sharpener—and hint: not a power grinder that will invalidate the company’s Forever Warranty—is the first important step. Sharpening is a two-step process: grinding and honing.

Next, Buck Knives suggests using a coarse grit sharpener if the knife’s blade is nicked or very dull. This process returns the blade’s edge from a dull U- to sharper V-shape. Angle of the blade to the sharpening stone’s surface is also important with 13- to 16-degrees being the best. Additional steps in the sharpening process include using a medium to fine grit sharpening surface and inspecting the blade’s edge honing results as you progress. As a rule, the number of sharpening strokes applied to one side of the blade should also be applied to the opposite side of the blade to stay consistent.

To further aid with knife sharpening, Buck Knives offers nearly a dozen sharpeners including the EdgeTek Dual Flat Pocket Stone Knife Sharpener with coarse and medium grit surfaces along with several FlipStik and Steel knife sharpeners. For knife owners on-the-go, there is a Diamond Pocket Knife Sharpener available. For those knife users who are very serious about sharp blades, there are two Bench Stone Knife Sharpeners offered and each comes with a lid for safe transportation and storage. Read more

Space Storms Produce More Vagrant Birds

Mountain Bluebirds are prone to vagrancy and are sometimes found in states far east of their normal range in western North America (photo by Paul Konrad).

Birders around the world are fascinated by vagrants – birds that turn up in unexpected places well beyond their species’ normal range. Vagrancy can be caused for a variety of reasons, but an interesting article published in Audubon magazine provides a new perspective on “lost” or “rare” birds. Ornithologists from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) recently found a new reason that birds go astray by analyzing 60 years of bird banding data. They demonstrated that the frequency of vagrant birds increases during periods of geomagnetic disturbance – during a distortion in the Earth’s magnetic field, or a space storm.

Benjamin Tonelli, the study’s co-author, began his Ph.D. program at UCLA working under co-author Morgan Tingley during the summer of 2020, and by accessing data from the US Geological Survey’s Bird Banding Laboratory – more specifically, records of 2 million captures of 152 land bird species spanning 60 years – Tonelli and Morgan were able to look for connections between the rate of vagrancy over time relative to other factors, including geomagnetic disturbance and solar activities.

A clear pattern emerged: Vagrancy during fall migration increased during disruptive periods to the Earth’s magnetic field. Increased levels of geomagnetic disturbance were associated with a 250 percent increase in the number of re-captures of banded birds from unexpected places or time periods; and the effect was even more pronounced for long-distance migrants. These are the birds we read about weekly in the American Birding Association (ABA), Rare Bird Alert. Read more
