Dove Hunting Tips by Buck Knives

GW: “The estimated US mourning dove population is around 350 million.” And, not a one is legal in Michigan.

Buck Knives, Inc., a widely-recognized global leader in the hunting, outdoor, and everyday carry (EDC) knife markets, joins many outdoorsmen and women in hearlding the opening of hunting seasons. For many hunters, the first day of the fall hunting season begins during Labor Day weekend with the opening of dove seasons. Need a reason to gear up, buy a license, and go hunting? The estimated US mourning dove population is around 350 million.

Buck Knives offers these tips for everyone planning and going on a dove hunting trip:

*Check all hunting equipment and pre-test any new equipment purchased. From seats to coolers to shotguns, check that all gear is in good working order. If you can’t find your hunting knife, consider some of these top knives from the Buck Knives’ factory: the 102 Buck Woodsman Knife; the 112 Ranger Sport Knife or the iconic 110 Folding Hunter Knife. All of these knives have, or are offered with, clip-point blades that can aid with precision dressing of bagged doves headed for the cookout or freezer. The fine point of the clip-style blade greatly aids with precsion cutting and each of these knives will be easy to handle and easy to clean after the cutting chores are complete. Find the best knife for dove hunting at www.buckknives.com.

*Scout and select an active hunting location. Doves are migratory birds that like to eat in open fields and drink from water sources like ponds. Use binoculars and scout for doves on the bare branches in dead trees, on the ground or around cut grain fields, along fence rows and near old gravel pits. Once you find a large number of doves, watch to see where the birds go–and where they are coming from. Top hunting locations are often sites where hunters can conceal in tall grasses and brush as doves travel to and from food and water.

*Pack the extras. When heading for a dove hunt, remember to pack snacks and water along with a seat and shotshells. Many hunters quit hunting because they become tired and thirsty. Snacks and water are very important if you will be bringing a young hunter along on her or his first dove hunt. Oh, in case you were wondering, the average hunter shoots more than 3 boxes–75 shotshells– to bag a limit of 15 birds. Using an improved or modified choke in the shotgun can also aid with connecting on more passing doves. Many hunters select shotshells with sizes #7.5, #8 and #9 shot for the hunt.

*Use a dog. The number one reason hunters cannot find a dove is because they have missed marking or noting the location where a dove went down after the shot. Wounded doves will also hide under grasses and weeds, so having a hunting dog along on the hunt can improve the recovery rates. Select a location where you and your canine hunting companion can be easily concealed from passing doves. Remember to bring water for the dog also.

Dove hunting provides quality recreation and time outdoors with family and freinds–plus a tasty meal for those who find success. Need a knife for the hunt? FN Announces Expansion of Global Alliance with True Velocity on Lightweight Medium Machine Gun

FN America, LLC is proud to announce the expansion of the strategic licensing and manufacturing alliance with ammunition and weapon system manufacturer TV Ammo, Inc. (“True Velocity”), to produce True Velocity’s .338 Norma Lightweight Medium Machine Gun for U.S. and Allied military units.

The international strategic alliance positions FN as the primary manufacturer of Texas-based True Velocity’s .338 Norma machine gun, both in the United States and the United Kingdom. The .338 is a recoil-mitigated weapon system designed to provide warfighters with range and terminal performance similar to that of the .50-caliber M2 machine gun, but with a lightweight, functional profile comparable to that of the ubiquitous M240 machine gun also manufactured by FN.

“FN America is extremely excited to partner with True Velocity on this effort to deliver the next medium machine gun to the U.S. military,” said Mark Cherpes, President and CEO for FN America, LLC. “Both companies share the drive and desire to innovate and deliver game-changing technology to the warfighter. This has produced a really great collaborative effort across our teams.”

A lightweight machine gun solution chambered for the .338 Norma cartridge has been a focal point of requirements emerging from the U.S. Department of Defense and Allied militaries in recent years. In March 2024, the United States Department of Defense selected True Velocity’s .338 Norma Lightweight Medium Machine Gun for continued evaluation in a military program aimed at fielding a weapon system that would bridge the performance gap between the .50-caliber M2 machine gun and the M240 machine gun chambered for 7.62x51mm NATO. SAF, NRA File Amicus Brief in Challenge of Mass. Gun Licensing Provision

The Second Amendment Foundation and National Rifle Association have filed an amicus brief with the Massachusetts Supreme Court in support of a New Hampshire man who is challenging the Massachusetts permit law.

SAF and NRA are represented by attorneys Adam Kraut with SAF in Bellevue, Wash., Joseph G.S. Greenlee and Erin M. Erhardt with NRA in Fairfax, Va., and Edward F. George, Jr., at Edward George & Associates in Arlington, Mass.

The case involves New Hampshire resident Dean F. Donnell, Jr., who was stopped by police in Massachusetts and charged for carrying a firearm without a license. In their 38-page brief, SAF and NRA explain their interest as that of their members’ ability to travel with firearms legally across state lines, to use them for lawful purposes.

“There is no historical tradition that justifies the non-resident licensing scheme now in place in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts,” said SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb. “Looking back, a government license has not been required to exercise the right to carry arms. Such licenses came into existence only in the late 19th Century, and they applied only to the concealed carry of firearms. Open carry was unrestricted.”

“Our brief,” explained Kraut, who is also SAF’s executive director, “discusses how there were often exemptions for those traveling from being subject to the same restrictions as residents of a particular state. We note how the licensing scheme in Massachusetts is unduly prejudiced against nonresidents. New nonresident license applications require an in-person appointment in Massachusetts, necessitating an extra (unarmed) trip to the Commonwealth—which, especially for residents of distant states, becomes a barrier to entry that may be financially untenable.” Read more

Game Wardens, Local Emergency Personnel Rescue 71-Year-Old Man

Maine Game Wardens, The Maine Forest Service, the Carrabassett Valley Fire Department and the Eustis Fire Department teamed up to rescue a 71-year-old Maine man who collapsed while hiking yesterday afternoon.

Gerard Jalbert, age 71, of Falmouth Maine was hiking with a friend and returning back from hiking to the top of Redington Mountain when he collapsed on the trail at approximately 12:30 yesterday afternoon.

The friend was able to call 911, and emergency personnel were able to get an exact location of the victim through the cell phone. Two teams consisting of multiple game wardens, Eustis Fire Department and Carrabassett Valley Frie Departments assembled quickly and began hiking in. One team hiked up the Appalachian trail up Crocker Mountain to access the Redington Trail, while the other team travelled by ATV on the Caribou Pond Road to an old snowmobile trail to an intersection with the Redington trail.

Both teams reached Jalbert at approximately 3:15 p.m. A decision was made then to contact the Maine Forest Service, who quickly arrived by helicopter, and was able to hoist him out of the woods, and transfer him to a waiting LifeFlight helicopter, who transferred him to Maine Medical Center in Portland. Jalbert remains at Maine Medical in stable condition.

“With the need to get Mr. Jalbert to the hospital quickly, state agencies and local emergency personnel were able to work together to rescue a man in a very remote area among some of Maine’s highest mountains,” said Sergeant Scott Thrasher.
