NWTF Launches Online Wild Turkey Record Form

EDGEFIELD, S.C.—The National Wild Turkey Federation’s Wild Turkey Records Program began in the fall of 1982 and has since been the authority of wild turkey records for anywhere wild turkeys are legally harvested, accumulating over 27,000 registered birds. And with recent upgrades to the NWTF’s website, the program will now allow harvests to be submitted digitally.

“The NWTF Wild Turkey Records Program houses some of the greatest birds ever harvested,” NWTF Chief Information Officer Jason Burckhalter said. “As more folks are getting outdoors and just in time for this spring season, we are excited to streamline the submission process. We also recognize some folks prefer the traditional submission process, and we will continue to accommodate them.”

NWTF members will be able to record their bird’s beard length, weight and spur size on the online form. Once approved, a score will be awarded, and the turkey will be accounted for on NWTF’s interactive map, allowing individuals to see how their wild turkey ranks among others in their county, state and throughout the country. It also allows users to search for the highest-scoring turkeys ever registered. Read more

EOTECH Vudu 5-25×50 FFP Adds Horus TREMOR3 Reticle

Ann Arbor, MI – Today’s marksmen rely on advanced optics technology for rapid target acquisition and long-range precision under all lighting conditions. The battle-tested Vudu® 5-25×50 FFP now offers an illuminated Horus™ TREMOR3™reticle for superior long-range accuracy. The Horus TREMOR3 reticle allows Vudu shooters to quickly and accurately estimate target range and size while compensating for bullet drop and wind.

This next-generation TREMOR3 reticle takes advantage of the Vudu 5-25×50 first focal plane design for accurate distance estimation, bullet drop and wind correction subtensions at any magnification. The uniform 0.2 milliradian Horus grid provides numerous aiming points, allowing for pin-point precision without guesswork. The reticle features refined “chevron” mil markers, at 0.1 milliradians, throughout the reticle for precise target range and size estimation. Vertical chevrons are ideal for milling target height, and horizontal chevrons for milling target width.

The Horus TREMOR3 features patented Time-of-Flight wind dots, providing accurate wind calls without the need to consult a ballistic chart or count numerous subtensions. A quick calculation using Horus’s online TREMOR Wind Dot Calculator calibrates the reticle’s wind dots for bullet ballistics and density altitude.

Easy-to-read Rapid Range Bars enable quick estimates of the range to known-size targets. The numbered vertical hash marks on both sides of the main horizontal crosshair indicate leads for targets moving at speeds up to 10 mph and work for many common calibers from about 200-500 yards. Both estimating systems work with the Accuracy 1st Speed Shooting Formula. Read more

Bear Archery Unveils Ultimate Adventure Truck for 2021 Total Archery Challenge Tour Novelty Shot Giveaway

Evansville, IN (April 14, 2021) — Bear Archery, a leader and innovator when it comes to archery and hunting equipment, unveiled the truck that they’ll be giving away at this year’s Total Archery Challenge. The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado TrailBoss will be given to one lucky archer at the end of the nine-city 3D archery tour. Bear and the team at Total Archery Challenge did not hold back when designing this year’s prize.

The Total Archery Challenge has quickly become one of the largest and most talked about 3D archery experiences in the United States. The event, very much like golf, features several courses ranging in difficulty and archers register in advance to pick a “Nock Time™” for a particular course. It is a non-competitive social outing for anyone interested in shooting their compound or traditional bow April through August. The event is open to anyone that wishes to attend.

This year’s truck giveaway features a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado TrailBoss 4×4 that is wrapped entirely in Bear Archery’s signature “Fred Bear Camo.” The adventure seeking pickup is also decked out in the latest and greatest off-road gear from several of Total Archery Challenge’s other partners. The Silverado received an off-road lift, Firestone off-road tires, a Retrax bed cover, Anthem off-road wheels, a Leitner Designs cargo system, a Free Spirit Recreation hard top tent, a tailgate liner from Mountain Hatch, and the #1 FOC arrow sleeve from Pro-Tracker Archery. There isn’t anything Bear and Total Archery Challenge skipped when building out this truck.

“Our team could not be happier with the end result of this year’s Shoot to Win truck,” said Bear Archery Marketing Manager, Alec Wyman. “We’ve been working for months with the team at Total Archery Challenge and their robust group of partners to bring shooters at this year’s tour stops the coolest, most capable, and adventure ready 4×4 in the history of the event.”

Attendees at this year’s Total Archery Challenge will have the opportunity to win the truck by hitting the center ring of a target more than 110 yards away – 111 yards to be exact. There are no magnifiers or clarifiers allowed, and the arrow cannot be breaking the line of the center ring. The Total Archery Challenge has staff on site with dedicated judges to determine eligible shots. Each designated “hit” earns the shooter one entry into the raffle. The winner of the truck will be selected after the final event in Snowbird, Utah the last weekend of July. Read more

RHD May Threaten Vermont’s Rabbits and Hares

The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department says a disease affecting rabbits and hares previously found in western states may be moving eastward. Rabbit hemorrhagic disease (RHDV2) is a virus known to be extremely lethal to wild and domestic rabbits, including cottontail rabbits and snowshoe hares.

RHDV2 was first found in New Mexico in 2010, but it has spread rapidly to other western states(https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/maps/animal-health/rhd), and a case involving a domestic rabbit was reported in Florida in late 2020.

Infection with the virus usually results in the quick death of a rabbit, often in only a few days. The virus is transmitted through direct contact between wild rabbits, domestic rabbits, or between wild and domestic rabbits. It is also easily spread indirectly through contact with dead infected rabbits, infected food and water supplies, personal clothing, and domestic rabbit cages. Read more

Michigan: Mason County Man Thanks DNR Officer for First Aid After Accidental Gunshot Wound

A Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officer used a tourniquet to stop blood loss from a 22-year-old Scottville man, who is recovering in an area hospital from an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The shooting occurred Sunday morning on U.S. Forest Service-managed land that is available for target shooting, east of Manistee in Manistee County.

Conservation Officer Scott MacNeill – the first emergency responder on scene, spoke with the thankful man on Monday morning. To respect the man’s medical privacy, the DNR is not releasing his name.

According to MacNeill, the man told him: “Your tourniquet saved my life. If I had to wait for EMS I don’t know what I would have done.”

The man used his cellphone to call 911 after he accidentally discharged a bullet from his .40 caliber Smith and Wesson Bodyguard pistol into his left leg. Manistee County Sheriff’s Office deputies received the initial call and communicated the incident to local emergency responders at 11:49 a.m.

Three minutes later, MacNeill arrived at the federal shooting area located east of Manistee in Norman Township, on the west side of Udell Hills Road, south of Steinberg Road. Read more
