Michigan Fires Back at HSUS over its Wolf Management

Long before animals had lawyers representing a small segment of society that values the lives of animals above humans, man existed by hunting.  In fact, there are millions of traditional rural Americans that, in essence, hunt to subsidize their existence today.  As a sportsman, I am among them. 

Predictably, the leading anti-hunting organization in the world, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), based in Washington, DC and not connected to our local shelters, has ridden its gravy train into our small town with a plea to now save Michigan’s wolves from extinction by aid of petition – even though in the history of regulated hunting, no animal species has ever been in peril, as a result.   

Their leaders, Wayne Pacelle and Mike Markarian have a plan for Michigan, and it doesn’t involve our wildlife biologists and scientists; it does involve suing us, however. 

These extremists have a dream inconspicuously absent in a recent Argus-Press editorial:  Wolf delisting isn’t based on best available science, by Mke Markarian, of The Humane Society Legislative Fund.  So, sharing their vision for America is my pleasure.  Read more

Facts on the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS)

Don’t be fooled by those puppy eyes and here’s why.

A look inside the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) – the largest and most well-financed anti-hunting group in the world.  For example, grants made by HSUS for the purpose of aiding pet sheltering appear to make up about only 0.25% (one-quarter of one percent) of HSUS’s budget. Even including spay/neuter and other grants made to shelters, that figure only goes up to about 0.50% of HSUS’s budget.  How do we know?  The tax returns, facts and figures are all contained here…

Racketeering Charges Move Forward Against HSUS

We have another update in the decade-plus-long litigation drama involving several animal rights groups, including the Humane Society of the United States, involving their alleged racketeering scheme against Feld Entertainment, owner of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

You may recall that in late 2009, animal rights groups saw their legal offensive against the circus tossed out of federal court by United States District Judge Emmet Sullivan of the District of Columbia. Meanwhile, Feld filed a suit against the animal rights groups alleging injuries under the Racketeer Influence and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO), the same law that’s been used to bust mobsters. Very saucy. On July 9, Sullivan denied most of the requests for a motion to dismiss brought by the defendants. Feld’s RICO suit will move forward. Read more

Times Square Billboards Blast Humane Society of the United States

Washington, DC – Today HumaneWatch.org, a project of the nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom, unveiled two new Times Square billboards on the corner of West 46th Street and 7thAve. The billboards highlight the Humane Society of the United States’ (HSUS) duplicitous fundraising practices—as the vast majority of its fundraising commercials feature dogs and cats, yet only one percent of the money HSUS raises from the public goes to local, hands-on pet shelters. HSUS Wants to Ban Hunting Dogs

Here is a warning to California hunters from the Western Outdoor News (www.wonews.com) that the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) appears to be commencing a campaign against California’s hunting dogs. HSUS is supporting SB 1221, a bill that would ban the hunting of bears and bobcats with dogs. Read more

Anti-Hunters after Neck of California Commissioner

In one of their biggest attacks on hunting in recent years, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and other anti-hunting organizations are seeking to remove a prominent hunter from the California Fish and Game Commission.   Commission President Daniel Richards is under attack from the world’s largest anti-hunting group after legally hunting a mountain lion in Idaho.

“This is a clear attempt by anti-hunting organizations to use the fact that Mr. Richards is a hunter to have him fired,” said Walter “Bud” Pidgeon, Jr., U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance president and CEO. Read more

Wildlife Land Trust Not to Be Trusted

The pitch sounds almost sounds palatable.  But, I wondered about the motive.  Here’s your answer…

If you have never heard of the Wildlife Land Trust, now could be a good time to take note. This project is a subsidiary of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the country’s largest animal rights group.   This anti-hunting trust reported control or ownership of more than 100 “sanctuaries” in 38 states.

Hunting and trapping are prohibited on these sites, many of which are donated to the HSUS.  In fact, they boast that “recreational and commercial hunting and trapping will always be prohibited”.

Unfortunately, they garnered $5 million in donations last year alone for this trust.

HSUS Gets a D from Charity Watch

HSUS’s Report Card: D

Here is the latest charity rating guide from CharityWatch (formerly the American Institute of Philanthropy). And once again, the Humane Society of the United States—a national animal-rights group, not a pet-sheltering organization—gets a “D” grade.

CharityWatch finds that HSUS spends as little as 49 percent of its budget on actual program costs, meaning the rest is overhead costs (salaries, pension plans, etc.). CharityWatch also determines that it takes HSUS up to 49 cents to raise every dollar.

For an organization that raises over $130 million a year, that adds up to considerable money spent on direct mail and telemarketers. In fact, HSUS spent almost $50 million on fundraising in 2010. All those tote bags and other doodads are tying up a lot of dollars that could be helping shelter pets. (Click the picture to enlarge.)

This is the fifth straight CharityWatch report in which HSUS has received a “D” grade, though it probably deserves an “F” for honesty given how much HSUS misleads Americans. That’s over a year and counting. Does anybody at HSUS care? Or are they satisfied with blowing doggie dollars, so long as it keeps the cash flowing?
