SAAMI and USDOT-PHMSA Develop Guidance for Shippers of Ammunition, Component Parts

NEWTOWN, Conn. – The Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute® (SAAMI®) is pleased to announce that a collaborative effort between the U.S. Department of Transportation, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) and SAAMI has resulted in the development of educational resources that provide guidance for shippers of ammunition and components.

This PHMSA-SAAMI collaborative effort is timely and important because with the increased demand for ammunition and components, the amount sold online and shipped by small distributors, retailers and individuals has increased dramatically. By providing this information, PHMSA and SAAMI will help to ensure that shipments of small arms ammunition and components are done safely and in accordance with existing requirements under the Hazardous Materials Regulations.

The document, called “The Facts on Small Arms-related HAZMAT,” provides information on determining what items are considered hazardous materials, what “EX Approvals” are and how they are used, packaging of explosives, shipping smokeless and black powder, shipping primers/percussion caps, shipping ammunition and empty primed cases, and shipping using the “Limited Quantity” (“LQ”) exemption. Winchester Ammunition FBI 9mm Contract Award

EAST ALTON, IL — Winchester Ammunition has been awarded in three out of four categories on a recent Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) 9mm ammunition contract. This annually renewable, five-year contract granted awards to Winchester in the following categories: FBI’s Duty/Service (Micro), Training – Reduced Lead and Frangible.

Federal and Speer Ammunition Awarded FBI Contracts

ANOKA, Minnesota –– The FBI awarded Federal and Speer Ammunition in all four categories of its handgun ammunition bid. This prestigious award keeps 35,000 employees trained and ready for duty. Three of the rounds will be manufactured in the Anoka, Minnesota facility and the other will be built in Lewiston, Idaho.

Federal and Speer were the only brands to be collectively awarded in all four ammunition categories: Service (Full Size), Service (Micro), Reduced-Lead Training, and Frangible. Federal and Speer were the primary for the Training and Frangible rounds with secondary designations for the full size and micro service rounds.

U.S. Army Awards Winchester $20 Million Series of Next Generation Squad Weapons Contracts

EAST ALTON, IL (January 3, 2022) — Winchester, the largest manufacturer of small caliber ammunition for the U.S. military, announced that the U.S. Army has awarded the company a total of $20 million in cost-plus and firm-fixed-price contracts related to ammunition development, manufacturing facility requirements analysis and production capacity planning for the 6.8mm Next Generation Squad Weapons (NGSW) program.

Work will be performed at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant (LCAAP) in Independence, Missouri, the United States’ only government-owned, contractor-operated small caliber ammunition production facility. These projects were awarded under Winchester’s $8 billion contract to operate LCAAP.

Lapua Seeks Rimfire Performance Center Manager

Marengo, OH – Lapua, world-renowned for producing the finest rimfire cartridges, is seeking candidates for Rimfire Performance Center Manager. The position will manage all aspects of the operation for the Lapua Rimfire Performance Center, located at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, OH. Clarus Acquires Barnes Bullets’ Utah HQ

Clarus Corporation announced that it has purchased the headquarters of its Barnes brand. The building, located in Mona, UT, is both the headquarters and production facility for the Barnes brand. Clarus purchased the building and land for $9.5 million.
