Sportsmen Urge BLM to Move Cautiously on Plans for Oil Shale Development in West

SILT, Colo. – As federal officials consider how to move forward on oil shale development, a sportsmen’s coalition is urging caution because no proven technology exists and the impacts on the West’s public lands, fish, wildlife, water and air quality are unknown.

In Ten Years NSSF Awards $4.7 Million to State Agencies

NEWTOWN, Conn. — The National Shooting Sports Foundation® has in ten years awarded $4.7 million in grants to 40 state wildlife agencies to fund projects providing novice and experienced hunters with more opportunities to go afield and new resources to plan hunts. Cannonball Kills Woman

POTRERO, Calif. (AP) — California authorities indicate a 33-year-old San Diego County woman was killed by a cannonball fired by her husband and another man.  U-T San Diego reports the woman was found dead at about 12:15 a.m. Tuesday after the ball slammed into her home at the Twin Lakes Resort mobile home park in Potrero,near the Mexican border.  State fire Capt. Mike Mohler says the men told authorities they were working on the cannon nearby when it went off. and one man was treated at a hospital for injuries he suffered when the cannon went off.

Republicans Support California’s DFG Chairman

Sacramento – Republican Senators have sent a letter to Senate Leader, Darrell Steinberg, expressing their concern over the unjustified campaign Animal Rights activists have waged against Department of Fish and Game Commission President Dan Richards. Richards was photographed with a mountain lion he legally took in Idaho. That photograph was recently published in a hunting magazine.   “Mr. Richards has not broken one law. In the state of Idaho it is perfectly legal to take down a mountain lion. After all, there are lots of states that don’t follow California’s lead on every issue,” said Harman.

Tall Ship Niagara to Take Students on Exceptional Field Experience

PUT-IN-BAY – Students interested in environmental science and policy have a unique opportunity for a summer class: a three-week trip across the Great Lakes on the tall ship Brig Niagara, a replica of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s flagship from the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. The course, which is offered as a partnership between Ohio State University’s Stone Laboratory, Niagara University, and Penn State University, will introduce students to hands-on lake science and Great Lakes policy issues while allowing them to experience life aboard an authentic wooden naval warship.
