The Michigan DNR has set a daily limit for walleye catches on Lake Erie to six through April 30. The DNR says the rule is based on a process adopted last year for setting catch limits based on real-time population data.
Michigan’s daily possession limit for walleye on Lake Erie is based on its share of the total allowable catch. That’s set by the Lake Erie Committee under the Great Lakes Fishery Commission.
The 2012 total allowable catch for Lake Erie is 3.49 million fish, making Michigan’s quota 203,000 fish

Alaska hunters are able to register bear bait stations with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game now but they must pass a bear baiting class to be legal. More here…

The Oregon Department of Agriculture, working with Governor Kitzhaber’s office, has approved $82,970 in funding appropriated by the 2011 State Legislature for county-level work to implement the Oregon Wolf Depredation Compensation and Financial Assistance County Block Grant Program. Funds have been distributed to eight counties east of the Cascade Mountains for actual livestock losses caused by wolves and for proactive efforts to prevent wolf impacts on livestock. Read more

MISSOULA, Mont.-So far in 2012, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation has allocated $1,258,888 for habitat stewardship and protection projects in six key elk states. The figure represents a significant increase from 2011. More than 139,000 acres should be conserved for elk and other wildlife in 2012 as a result of these initial allocations. Read more
Anja Heister, executive director for Footloose Montana, a Missoula-based nonprofit organization trying to ban trapping in Montana, says a trapper’s decision to pose for a photograph crosses ethical boundaries and is inhumane.
In response, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game completed an investigation into the incident and concluded that the trapper did not commit any legal violations.
