The Michigan Department of Natural Resources announced today that Abby Wetherell, 12, was injured Thursday by an attack by a black bear in Wexford County, north of Cadillac. Abby was airlifted to Munson Medical Center where she underwent surgery and is in stable condition and under observation. She suffered deep lacerations in her thigh. Read more
Starting Sept. 5 the Department of Natural Resources’ Weekly Fishing Report will be available via a toll-free telephone number. Anglers will now be able to hear the report, previously accessed by a Lansing-based number, without incurring any phone charges.

Like members of Congress, state legislators are elected to represent their constituents and vote on the laws that affect them. When legislators fail to represent the will and beliefs of their constituents and become beholden to outside influences, it is up to their constituents to fire them.
This is exactly what’s happening in Colorado with State Senate Majority leader John Morse facing a recall election starting on Aug. 20. Sen. Morse forgot about his constituents who elected him when he started taking his legislative orders from Mayor Bloomberg and the Brady Campaign, hastily ushering through a series of anti-gun laws in the wake of the tragedies in Aurora and Newtown. Raleigh, NC- Governor Pat McCrory and North Carolina Commerce Secretary Sharon Decker announced yesterday that Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc. will establish a new manufacturing facility in Rockingham County. The company plans to create more than 450 new jobs in North Carolina by the end of 2017 and invest more than $26 million in the new Mayodan location. Read more
Federal dollars are igniting a new conservation partnership in northeast Michigan. Huron Pines, a nonprofit organization, recently received $171,000 from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Joint Venture Habitat Restoration and Protection Program (Joint Venture Program). The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative funding will be used to plant 2 million jack pine seedlings in Kirtland’s warbler management areas, streamline community outreach programs and offer landowners cost-share opportunities. The Department of Natural Resources today announced the totals from its annual walleye rearing pond harvest and stocking of walleye fingerlings. The DNR Fisheries Division stocked 4,160,502 walleye fingerlings in 120 water bodies located throughout Michigan this spring and summer. Read more
